2 of these for me in the last month. (previously my parents, now mine)

Anyone know the best place to get shipping material (ESD bag, foam box)? Hitachi/IBM website has a link to an online vendor, but im not going to add a week to my RMA time and pay out the nose for shipping material. I'm looking for a B&M vendor. Preferably in the Detroit area

The good news is i picked up an 80GB WD SE from newegg.com for $109 shipped. Never again will I buy IBM.

Newegg ships fast so wait for the WD and use the stuffs with it to ship to hitachi... You'll prolly get a GXP60 or better back.

I suppose that will work.

Since I will be getting 2 of these back, has anyone else RMA'd their dead IBM drive back recently? What did you get back? Should I even trust them for anything?

I was thinking about making one my backup drive for data and such. I figure since the OS wouldn't be on it there won't be as much wear and tear. Or should I just try and ebay them and get them off my hands?

I've been seen/been over 30 IBM HD's (60's, 75's and 120's) sent back 2 and all was good (75's came back 60's ALWAYS back up your data no matter what HD you use

Yeah thats for sure. Thankfully I noticed some clicking this morning and was able to back up all my documents and email before the hard drive died while copying some photos to my back up drive. Thanks for the replys!

take the two IBM's that youre getting back and run them in RAID 1....never have to worry about losing data again.

i bought a WDC drive from best buy, used the exact same box/packing to send it

IBM had some problems with their 75 GXP's. It is really a shame, but you can RMA and get new drives, so let's move on. I have had a 60 GXP for two and a half years and just bought a 120 GXP. They are running great in RAID-O and I haven't had any problems with them. I am just trying to say that IBM is a good company, and they make good products.

I mailed out a hard drive once, and went to a local computer shop to get some shipping materials. To my surprise, they just gave me everything I needed for free. Try it, you might have the same luck!

1st time I'm sending my bad 80gig 75gxp to Hitachi. They're returning 75gxp models into 60gxp? How reliable are the 60gxp hard drives?

Hopefully more reliable than these seemingly defective 75gxps they've been giving me. This will be my 4th IBM hard drive in less than 2 years! Go IBM!

I had a 60GXP

It died.

RMA'd.

Got back another 60GXP with a "servicable used part" sticker on it.

(real nice. not)

Clanks so loud on seeks it sounds like there are loose ball bearing inside, can hear it through the wall on the other side of the living room.

RMA yours, sell the replacement to someone who hasn't had their IBM die yet and still thinks they're ok.

I've still got two 30 gig 75 GXPs and a 60 gig 60 GXP... still running fine for me. Once a 30 gig started being very noisy, so I powered down, hit it on the side, switched to a much cooler mounting layout for my HDs, still going two years later.

The 60GXP drives don't have a class action lawsuit pending in the CA court system the 75GXP does.

If I accept a 60GXP instead of a 75GXP do I waive any potential claim with regards to the pending lawsuit?

Is the 60GXP reliable?
Hitachi said they would be giving me a different model, is it advisable to accept a 60GXP or should I ask for the good ol 75GXP?

I just did an RMA for the second time on a 75GXP. This was replacing a replacement. I called about getting a different series of drive and was told that although it was not their policy, they would see what they could do.

Well, I got another 75GXP. All told, I have replaced 5 of these.

I've sold 4 on eBay, and the 5th is on there right now with one bid. Six days and it will be gone.

My household will soon be IBM free.

I've been using a 60 GXP for more than an year now. After I bought it, it even fell down a couple of times on its head (it was in the top pocket of my handbag
and the airport staff are really polite to your luggage!) before I even used it. Except for a chronic bad sector problem I face in Septembers (both 2001 and 2002)
I have had no problems with the drive. I still don't know what causes bad sectors in Septembers . I do a lot of disk-intensive work so I guess the drive served
me really well overall.

This is not a true statement I have not read one post on this board that the person got back a NEW drive, they just send back some junk that others sent in.

You have to look at the full model# on the drive label on top of the drive:

60GXP: IC35L040AVER07
120GXP: IC35L040AVVA07

Looks like you figured out as I was typing the response

I just recently sent in a RMA for my 45GB 75GXP drive to Hitachi. In about 2 weeks after they received my defective drive they sent out a replacement drive. It turned out to be a brand new 60GB 120GXP drive. I'm happy so far with the new drive so far, hope there are no more troubles with this model unlike the old 75GXP drives I had...
