Another Firefox 3.5 thread

As far as I can tell I'm having different problems than other people so that's why I started a new thread. I only looked over a couple though so forgive me if I'm mistaken.

It started yesterday, little things that at first I thought were due to SETI taking all my CPU power or something. I'd open a new tab and even though the cursor was in the address bar I'd have to actually click it before I could type anything. Same with the search bar. I went onto Facebook and noticed that every time I'd click a link I'd have to refresh the page for it to actually load. Then when I closed Firefox and came back a few hours later to use it for something it said that I still had an instance running and this is where I noticed the same RAM issue that others are having. When I use Gchat for some reason my contacts list doesn't load properly and at least half the people are listed as "mk61."

All of this is still happening even after a fresh install just 30 minutes ago. At first I assumed I had a corrupt profile because that's happened before, but now I don't know what the deal is.

Edit: There's also a strange amount of lag when using Gchat or occasionally in a regular text field.

Try disabling addons to see if it helps.

Repost of my post from this thread because it sped up FF 3.51 a lot, even in ways not related to Acrobat.

I've been extremely disappointed with Firefox. It's slow and jerky, and links to Acrobat pdf's spike CPU usage to 100% and hangs Firefox 3.51 like it was at a lynching. My old Netscape 7.22 doesn't do that.

I found a work around for links to pdf files, illustrated, here.

I made the recommended change to use the separate Adobe Reader application. FF 3.51 now loads much faster. No hangs on pdf's, at least so far. Scrolling pages is smoother, and even my bookmarks display faster and without as much of the herky-jerky feel they were displaying before the change.

The links were down shortly after I first posted them. They're now working, but if they fail again, here are the instructions:

1. Open Firefox.

2. Click "Tools"

3. Select "Options"

4. Click "Applications"

5. Find all listed Adobe Acrobat applications.

Click each, one at a time. My system shows four. Yours may differ. Click the down arrow tab at the right end of the window, and change the default application from "Use Adobe Acrobat (in Firefox)" to "Use Adobe Reader [version] (default)."

That's it. I think you'll find it helps a lot. It did for my machine.

I didn't have any add-ons installed except for Greasemonkey but right now I'm running without it and still having the same issues. I'm hanging on regular webpages, not PDFs, so I'm not sure if that'll help. Again, sorry on the repost, I just browsed through a couple threads about Firefox and seemed like some of my issues were a little bit different.

I tried Harvey's "fix" and it seems to have worked on everything, not just PDFs. Opens quicker, bookmarks open quicker, less 'jerkiness'. Thanks Harvey, works for me.
