Hi all,

I'm putting together a new PC and would like some input on parts/brands to use. I've ordered an occulus rift that will arrive in June and I figure I might as well have an up to date PC to go with it.

CPU - i7 3770K
I'm looking at this CPU instead of the i5 just for the hyperthreading. I've got a pet theory that since the new consoles are going the 8-core route games are going to be more optimized for multi-threading.

MotherBoard - ASRock extreme4
Just seemed like its at a good price/performance place

Graphics Card - HD 7970
Similar architecture to the new consoles. Any recommendations on brands here? Maybe something that spits hot air out the back of the case?

RAM - ?
I'm thinking 2x 4GB for a total of 8. Not sure about brand/speed would like some input here. I can get another couple of sticks later if I want more.

1. PC is being built for gaming.

2. 800-900 dollars

3. US . I should point out that I live in dubai and am ordering the parts from the US since there's not much selection available here and what we do have comes at a premium. This means no rebates for me

5. No brand preference

6. I'll be reusing my case, HDD, SSD, monitor, power supply (2 years old good model), OS, peripherals

7. Very light overclocking to start

8. 1080P

9. I'd like to order parts mid-late may but if there is anything that will affect current prices coming up I can wait a little while longer

Thanks for the help

I've just realized I can comfortably reuse my old power supply with the new rig and edited my post to reflect that.

Thanks for the help but now I'm within the budget I'm looking for ~$866. Any refinements you would make? Any particular issues with RAM compatibility and the MOBO?

RAM, so long as it is the same SKU, is pretty much compatible with any mobo. Companies post a list of sticks they've tested, but that is by no means exhaustive.

If you don't need a PSU: $50 can push you up from a 7850 to a 7870XT (which is basically a 7950 with cut-down memory).

Seems like I'm pretty much good to go then, are the HD7970 brands pretty much interchangeable?

mj79, come to Dubai, but stop by a microcenter on your way here

Yeah... except XFX tends to have the worst cooler. Sapphire, MSI, and Gigabyte tend to be hed held in the highest regard, but Diamond, HIS and Powercolor are also very good.

Essentially, they are interchangeable though.

i7 3770 (non-K) + Z77 Extreme4 == does not compute!

I would skip the i7 and go for this i5 3570K + ASRock Z77 Extreme4 combo for $295. The extra threads (not cores) in the i7 just don't do much for you in gaming.

Any improvements in multithreading of console ports will take years to percolate through the development chain, at which point the PC will have laughably outstripped consoles anyway. Take that $150 worth of savings and put it towards and upgrade in 2-3 years time.

Maybe someone from the For sale section selling a 3570K or 3770K would sell & ship you theirs at a good price since Haswell is around the corner.
