Tracking stolen goods!!

Just suffered from a "home invasion" where pre-dawn raiders jemmied open the front door, raced in, grabbed our wallets, cell phones and car keys and raced away in the car.

Bad, but it put me to thinking (at times like this one's thoughts drift to dist computing, hmmmm that seems to be all the time).

If you have the dnet "client" installed on your machines and they dump through one of our pproxys you can actually back-track the machine if it's ever stolen. (Moment the machine or the intact drive appears on the net you get an ip)

Now if you have a situation at work where there's a chance of a machine walking, why not tell the boss to install this little dnet "security" program that tracks down the stolen machine when it pops up on the Internet.

Maybe an idea worth developing.

I have thought of that before too, Dantoo!

I actually had a nice laptop stolen months ago. Lucky for him, the guy didn't get on the Inet, or I woulda gotten blocks to my pproxy and nailed him quick, fast, and in a hurry. Doesn't matter tho, I got the thing back, and two people got kicked out of my school . That unamed person also got a good beating.

Actually, about 1 year ago, a member (dont remember who but he sure does) got several machines stolen with their modem, and tracked them donw this way. Though they were blocked for some time as "criminal evidence", he eventually got em back.

I remember that too, in fact the person that stole them was on-line at the time the police knocked on his door. There were several incidents prior to that where DNET helped track down stolen PCs.

We had a laptop stolen recently at work, but it was configured to use the internal perproxy with no fallabck, and our IP addys are private. I don't think there is anyway to track it, as it was set to nofallback, so it won't even try to connect to DNET. I might have to rethink that one. :Q
