I'm strongly considering purchasing one of these, I have compared it to many glocks in the same caliber, however I was wondering how it would stack up against the Springfield XD.

Text

I don't think I can go wrong for the price.

479.00 with two extra mags(Four total)

Any thoughts? It will be primarily used for ranged shooting, and possibly home defense, however I already have a shotgun for that purpose.

Whenever I see the name "Springfield XD", I think Springfield smiley face.

I was able to shoot a M&P .40, and I liked it, with three changeable back straps included I'm sure it will fit fine because the .40 did.

However I haven't been able to get a hold of a XD to shoot, the onlt range near me does not have an extensive selection.

I have never shot the XD but I do have the M&P .40 and I really like that gun. And you're right, having the interchangeable backstraps is very nice.

Yep, sure is a nice gun. How long have you had yours? How is the reliability? I really like the .40 and .45 ACP, but when I combine the initial price difference and the cost of ammo I don't think its worth it.

I have heard several gun shop owners say the M&P line from Smith and Wesson is complete crap.

Recommend you investigate this before you buy one.

I shot this at the range and found it to be uncomfortable.

If you want a 9mm you can't go wrong with a glock.

Yes you can. Glocks don't fit my hand and don't point naturally for me. Lots of people love them and I think they are quality guns, but not every gun fits every person.

I've shot a few XD's. They are good guns. I've never shot a M&P.

You really need to hold one and see how it fits your hand.

Since your local range doesn't carry XD's, you may want to go to the range when they are busy. Talk with other guys shooting and someone may have an XD that they will let you shoot.

Around here, Cabela's and Bass Pro Shop both carry XD's. If there's one in your area, you could at least hold the XD there and see if it is comfy in your hand.

Good luck!

Hmm. Did they say why? I have yet to find a reliable source online that dislikes the M&P. I see a lot of law enforcement adopting it though.

The only thing I don't like is that you cannot fire a round without a magazine inserted, if I do a mag top off in a life and death situation I want to be able to utilize the chambered round if I need to. But I'm pretty sure that will never happen to me, however if I was LEO that might be a deal breaker.

Jon Farnham from DTI does firearm training and so sees a lot of different guns and they get a real workout during his course has commented that they haven't had any failures on his course and seems to rate them about the same as the XD but prefers the M&P it as it doesn't have the grip safety which he considers unnecessarily. He did not have the same opinion of the Sigma he thought they were junk.FYI I have the 40c and so I have put 150rd through it so far and no problems. And it sounds like a good deal for the 9c I would jump on it.

Actually they added it back in due to LEO requests. They planned on eliminating the "no mag, no shoot" feature, and have on some models, but the M&P was initially directly marketed to Military and Police. I personally don't like the "feature" but my wife won't get one without it.

I think that either the xD or the M&P are good purchases. Try them out on a range and see what fits better. You might have to hunt for a range with them though.

There are a few indoor ranges in Wisconsin. Midwest Shooters Supply in Lomira and Shooters Shop in West Allis.

i like the feel of the M&P better than the XD. I've shot a 9mm XD and I didn't like the grip, the top heavy feel, and the trigger. I've never shot a M&P though.

My rant about the 9mm for the week:

Had a guy in our recovery room yesterday, shot with a 9mm. Hit in the chest, multiple times, they went in to retrieve the slugs and found on in his heart, in the right ventricle, spinning from the blood flowing through the right ventricle.

If I shoot someone, I want them to die. We have multiple GSW patients all the time, and they've nearly all been 9mm. We've had one patient shot by a 45 that survived, the cops hit him in the hip, it destroyed the hip joint and the guy lost his leg.

I've had multiple patients WALK into the ER with multiple 9mm hits.

The M&P is a beautiful gun, so is the springfield XD.

Main diff is that I think XD only comes in the .40S&W flavor, and that is a very nice home defense round, accurate, reliable. Plus you can fit more in the clip then a .45 and not much less then 9mm

I love the M&P more than any other polymer pistol. Most of the reviews I've read online end with the author saying they're switching their carry pistol to the M&P. They're easier to find than glocks now. I have a feeling they're going to become super popular with law enforcement.

I think both if not just one of the detectives that work at my office carry the M&P.

Sig 226 is really what I'd recommend you check out. All those polycarbonate pistols are trash IMO relative.

M&P is available without the mag safety. Shop around.

If you buy one with the mag safety (too good a deal to pass up), check on the M&P forum or the Smith & Wesson Forum. You should be able to find a link to instructions (or gunsmith services) to disable the "feature".

FNP9 is the polymer pistol no one knows about, but it is seriously comfortable. I suggest you try to find one to try it out.

Then you go to gun stores run by idiots or you are confusing the Sigma line with the M&P line.

All three of the gun shops that I frequent recommend the M&P very highly. I've had my M&P .40 for a little over a year now and it has never malfunctioned.

My M&P .40 absolutely will fire with the magazine removed. There are two versions of each caliber available, one with the magazine disconnect and one without. Any decent gun shop should be able to order the version without the disconnect (provided that it is legal in your state). Note the warning on my own M&P .40.

I've put a couple thousand rounds through mine, both factory loads and reloads and it will eat anything. It's a great firearm, I cannot recommend it enough.

M&P was a fine gun. I had the "full sized" 9mm. Ended up selling it because it didn't stack up to my P229 but I'm considering getting another one.

Go and join this forum if you want a bigger source of information.

PliableMoose: I'm sure your multiple gsw victims might also be because 9mm is such a popular round. I'm guessing that 9mm you found in the heart wasn't a jhp? I personally like Federal HST or winchester rangers in my pistols. In my "compact" and larger sized ones, I use 147grain and in my little kahr pm9, I use 124gr +p. See here for information found on winchester' website that I made a chart out of.

Maybe they just were not using right bullets? Like P++... In ballistic charts all these auto catriges seem to be close to one another, +-15%, save 10mm.

I think 44mag is starting point because of barrier penetration and loads 3x the energy of 9mm, 357 sig, 40cal, & 45cal. Rest are pinker unless you're real close. I have killed a deer with a .45 but that was after I shot him with muzzle loader and he still ran for a mile. OTOH I dropped one dead as a doornail with 44mag.
