Mom/Sis are in Gulfport...+1 Sis says she doesn't expect to have a house or business after the storm...-1
Yea, gauging by the video from those riding it out in hotels where it came ashore it looks like few wooden framed houses survived without major damage. A large percentage of homes in FL are of cinder-block construction, (as is mine), but of course the roof, roof framing, trusses, are all wood. Even the newer homes built to stronger codes are going to struggle with 155 + MPH winds. 800,000 + without power and restoration in the areas where landfall might take months IMO, they will be rebuilding the power grid, not repairing it.The pictures coming out of Mexico Beach and parts of Panama City show horrific wind damage. Anyone downplaying this doesn't have a clue. It's going to take a long time to clean this up. Good luck to those affected by this. And it's not over!
House in Mexico Beach and business in Port St Joe. Did, anyway.Do they have a house in the panhandle?
I assume your sister had hurricane insurance? Regardless, it has to suck. We got quite bit of wind and rain from the tropical storm Michael passing through Atlanta but luckily no damage to the property.House in Mexico Beach and business in Port St Joe. Did, anyway.
Looks like the eye is just about over us (Augsta GA area). Power's out at the house but I needed coffee so at the office I am and hanging with my BFFs.
Mom said that she did not on her business but that may not be correct. I hope she did on the house.I assume your sister had hurricane insurance? Regardless, it has to suck. I go down to the Port St Joe area multiple times a year for vacation. It's my favorite area of Florida. It's going to be sad to see all the damages the next time I visit.
Might have been in the CNN link I posted above. Someone said that it was like an EF2 or possibly 3 but it stayed for 30 minutes instead of 2 or 3.Wow the damage in she parts hit hard by Michael is unreal. It looks like a tornado made it's way through but it wasn't just a narrow path like a tornado, it's widespread.

https://www.weather.gov/jetstream/tc_potentialHoly Christ! Pretty telling quote from that video, an E2 or E3 tornado passes in seconds, Michael was like being trapped inside one for 30 minutes.
Damn, you beat me to it. THAT is the major takeaway from the video. I've rode out a few F1 and F2 hurricanes, but I've never experienced anything even close to that. The difference between 100MPH winds and 150MPH winds is a hell of a lot more than 50MPH. It's like a completely different order of magnitude.
What this means is the potential damage from a hurricane is 2^8 power. For example, a doubling of the wind speed from 75 mph (121 km/h) to 150 mph (241 km/h) is not a doubling or quadrupling of potential damage but a 256 times increase (2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2=256).
Yep. 6.0 is 10x 5.0Yeah, when it comes to the power of mother nature, it's orders of magnitudes, not a linear scale. I believe earthquakes ratings are the same.
Oh shi*, did not know that, I'll edit my post, hope she's OK though, this a badass Mofo..Allisolm's a she (no pics yet).
Note that they're measuring damage in dollars. Still, it's rooted in reality. Winds are subject to the laws of kinetic energy, just like anything else moving. So the amount of energy is the velocity squared.
Sis said there's ~300 unaccounted for in MB.My lord. I have no words.
Sis said there's ~300 unaccounted for in MB.
And, no, she didn't have insurance. 2 stores, maybe another building and her house. She said wind/flood insurance was $6K/mo for all of them. That sounds ridiculous to me but I've never had cause to price insurance at the beach. Reports are that her house and business in MB actually did pretty well. The store in Port St Joe had 3'+ of water standing in it.

I can understand. Hurricane insurance is crazy expensive. And it's only going to get more expensive after this.Sis said there's ~300 unaccounted for in MB.
