Get a car and all the other stuff required by the SCCA (fire suit, helmet, etc) and go enter some events. You can run pretty much any kind of car you want....I've seen everything from 5-liter Mustangs to RX-7s to pickup trucks. Kick enough ass and you'll start attracting sponsors. My brother's "weekend job" is one of the service monkeys for a Mazda-sponsored friend of his. He travels a ton since the events are all over the place, but loves it.
Be warned; it's a super-expensive sport. Entry fees alone will run you hundreds of dollars per event.
Getting started in SCCA Pro rally.
My brother and I are slowly getting into it. He picked up a 1st-gen RX-7 with a blown motor that we're going to convert to a dedicated autocross car first and finally to a full-blown rally car once we've got the loot for the roll cage, spares and all the other crap. That was Tommi Makinen crashing in spectactular fashion at Argentina. Thankfully neither he nor his co-driver were hurt.

Nothing like the B-class cars of the 80's though. Some of those had ludicrous gobs of power, enough to be axed cause of the fatalities that resulted. :Q
