I decided to try out Linux a couple months ago so a friend of mine tried to install Mandrake on my laptop as a dualboot but it wouldn't boot for some reason. So then we tried Fedora Core 3 and finally got it running but I have some major problems with it. My wireless internet does not work, java does not work, I can't access the files from my Windows partition and I have no sound. I really do love yum and linux itself but I am really frustrated with so many things that are not working right now. Is there another Linux distro that would be better for me and provide better hardware support? Should I try Fedora Core 4?

Here are my laptop specs:

Compaq Presario V2000 (http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopp...&catLevel=2&tab_switch=true&tab=specs)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

Display: 14.0" WXGA BrightView Widescreen (1280x768)
Graphics Card: Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller
Memory: 512MB DDR SDRAM (1x512MB)
Hard Drive: 60 GB 4200 RPM Hard Drive
Primary CD/DVD Drive: DVD+/-RW/R & CD-RW Combo w/Double Layer Support
Networking : Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG WLAN
Primary Battery: 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

1. Search, there are currently 2 other "what distro" threads on page 1

2. Ubuntu linux, it would support all that sutff out of box (5.10) including wireless. The exception would be dvds, you have to enable some other repos to get libdvdcss

Does Ubuntu have yum or something similar to it?
And it FC4 as good in supporting hardware as Ubuntu? What about SuSE?

While I think Ubuntu is the best for new users, we should probably list the top 10 distros, with a quick paragraph about them done by some of the users of that distro.

I think a list of some sort with pros/cons of each distro is a great idea. I'm a noob but I'd be willing to offer my opinions on Fedora Core 4. I installed and played with Ubuntu but not enough to give a worthwhile opinion.

I am just sick of feeling like I am battleing other members to prove that xx distor is more fit for certain needs, as mentioned we need a sticky for each distor (The main ones i.e Fedora Core , Debian, Ubuntu, SuSe, Mepis and so on).

Here comes :
Someone has to start a thread about this.
This someone before starting the thread PMs Linux Gurus around.
And each Linux Guru picks a distro.
Once the major distros are distributed among the gurus , that someone will start a thread , Those gurus will put in the info, contact a mod lock it done.
From the pattern I have been noticing here, I think I know at least 3 distros and who are the best memebers / enthusiasts each distors. Till now I can get members for each of Ubuntu,Debian and Fedora Core .Offcourse there has to be at least 10 options so someone else should take care of getting someone for the other distors. Sounds good ?
Also each distro would have a small summary of pros / cons and whatever can be brief and to the point.
