I am amazed why any planes would be flying in that airspace and the US authorities are asking the Malaysians authorities why a plane was flying in that particular area. They are of course investigating and trying to determine who may have shot it down, but right now it's all speculation. No one knows who did it at this point.

Both Russia and Ukraine have shot down civilian planes in the past, but I think in all likelihood, the Eastern Ukraine rebels shot it down thinking it was a Ukrainian military plane, based on what I've seen so far. Tragic situation.
If Putin provided high altitude missiles to a bunch of amateurs without tight controls, that was a disaster waiting to happen, dumb move, and Russia will be paying for it.

The shoulder fired missile systems the separatists are known to have wouldn't have the range to reach a commercial aircraft at altitude. This would have to be an advanced missile system either provided by the Russians or owned by the Ukraine. And I can't see the Ukrainian military shooting down an aircraft over their territory flying in commercial jetways.

The Ukraine government claims the separatists shot it down with a Buk anti-aircraft system, which is I believe a vehicle mounted system. Don't know if that's true but they are alleging more advanced weaponry than what you describe. I assume they are being armed by Russia so it doesn't seem implausible.

It's possible it is a system the separatists captured from Ukraine's military but it's to early to know. The timing for Russia is extraordinarily poor after they just got more limited sanctions laid on for not stopping the flow of weapons to the separatists nor withdrawing support. Either way the odds are good that people they're aligned with just killed a bunch of EU citizens which will definitely alter the calculus of how much economic pain they'll endure to screw Putin.

the lasting lesson i imagine certain individuals will take home from this is to wait a few days before bragging about shooting down a plane online. not a good choice if you didn't shoot down the right plane....

Ukraine shotting it down makes no sense. Even as an accident. They would have to be the stupidest people on the planet since the plane would have been traveling in the wrong direction (to russia, not from russia.

As divided as this forum is sometimes, it is nice to see us come together has a community.

Because the only country to ban their domestic flagged carriers from flying over Ukraine is the US. No other country has banned flights over this area. It was reported this very plane and flight crew flew to Amsterdam yesterday on the same flight plan. This was their return leg.

An AP reporter covering the warfare had said he saw a Buk in the area earlier in the day(prior to the airliner going down). Its pretty much a given the separatists have Buks because of their success in shooting down Ukrainian planes.

Apparently, there has been a notice to airmen to avoid Crimea airspace, but Lugansk and Donetsk were not included, even after multiple military planes being shot down with SAMs.
