It's a very weak blame, though, and that says something. He doesn't blame Ukraine for shooting it down, but rather for creating the conditions (i.e., fighting the insurgency) that resulted in the shootdown. Happily ignoring of course that he's the main source of fuel for the insurgency.

I think it speaks volumes to the evidence laid against him that this is the best deflection that he could come up with.

I understand why Russians would shoot down this plane. It scares off people who might want to send help or supplies to this region. Russia just wants to intimidate outsiders from interfering in their business. This is how Tyranny works, through fear and oppression.

They didn't want to. They may be thuggish brutes, but they're not stupid. They know how bad this looks and how this will drain away whatever little support they have left in the world and likely even hurt their domestic support, too. They thought they were firing on a Ukrainian military plane. And they fucked up and fired on an airliner instead.

No I do not advocate a war, lets make that clear to start.

I do have a problem with how the White House has handled the situation. Obama has made sanctions, the peaceful alternative to war. He has only recently stepped up and enforced more drastic sanctions which warranted a response from Putin that they will retaliate. He has not pushed for the EU to enforce harder sanctions. On top of it all what sanctions he has pushed forward have been laughed off by Putin.

Putin has shown in the past three years he is not past the Cold War and is attempting to establish Russia as the worlds superpower. The guy is off his rocker and has had little response to current actions. He is pushing forth on an American backed country. Ukraines, the EU's, UN's, and Americas efforts have been ignored. At some point you have to stop playing around and play hard ball. Whether that is increased military aid to Ukraine, stricter sanctions despite economic downfall, or strategic military strikes, something more than what is currently being done needs to happen.

- What? EU is practically following US'es lead here, but sanctions hurts both ways and many EU countries are still struggling with the aftermath of.... Banking Gone Wild(tm) / finansial crisis. Obama wants more and harder sanctions and we the EU is like "but it butt-huuuuurts".

Putin is defn. off his rocker, or rather, noone really knows wtf this dude is up to and that is the worst kind of enemy you can deal with, the one you dont understand, cant predict, cant embrace.
Either way this is happening in our backyard and IMO it is very very polite of Obama and you guys to step off and let us step up, we need to handle this, show ourselves as well as every one else that we're not suckpuppets to be smacked around. The last part may involve some growing pains on our part, but we need em.

He's been a snake from the start, spitting words of peace and harmony in the face of every single world leader - and with the other hand engineering war and civil unrest in ukraine. The focus right now may be eastern ukraine but lets not forget crimea allready, land he now proclaims "Russian" - and the fact that he has openly admitted that "they" were present during the uprising (spetsnaz etc? spetsnaz is specialised in engineering this kind of unrest in a given populace, it is just too good a fit to be a coincidence).
Dangerous man, this Putin.
Another thing, in retrospect, that bothers me is the PR/propaganda campaign he has been on for the last, what 5, years in Russia? You will see him wrestling tigers, horseback riding (topless!), diving for national treasures etc etc, clearly portraying him as superman (not quite Kim Jong, but the same general idea).. And it has worked, the people love him.
I cant shake the feeling that this situation(Ukraine) was engineered well before this "PR" campaign started. It is just a too-well played hand to not be knowing the deck (..of cards, does that reference makes sense?).

This 100%. Also, my friend who usually is up on news like this, told me they actually had deviated around 500 miles of course, which ultimately took them into the warzone area. Wtf? I could see 500 miles off course to avoid that area... but putting yourself into it? Ehhhhhh...I would assume the plane should be on auto pilot at that point... I don't get why it would deviate from an expected course.

And naturally, the ruskies have the black boxes, so we will never know what actually happened now. Great.

Also, this situation blows for Obama. I kind of feel bad for him in a way. On one hand, he has to act. He has to do something forceful here to show that America will not stand for the killing of our innocent citizens. But, on the other hand, he risks negative outlash that could further spread the shit storm and ultimately lead to a possible [cold?] war with Russia.

Edit: Looks like there weren't any Americans on board from the latest news. So that's good to hear I suppose..

I just fundamentally disagree. Why should the rest of the world have to change to accommodate these pieces of shit? Fuck them. We have enough evidence to prove who did it. The guilty parties should be put to death. If Putin had a single shred of integrity he would do it himself and get the rest of his minions under control.
