(my personal opinion based on what i need/want in a gfx card):
- probably very expensive (256 bit mem...)
- useless features for which you pay (tv out, dvd, 3 heads)
- no optimizations like nvidia or ati has, rather "plain" speed
- no real dx9 card
- no ps1.4
read the article...hell there's a lot to read....great article btw....
+ fast (?)
+ probably FANTASTIC antialiasing (SSAA affects only polygon edges)
+ displacement mapping (ROCKS!!!!) and n-patches
- I personally do NOT need any gimmicks like DVD..since i own a very high quality progressive Pnasonic 'real' dvd-player..i dont want a low quality dvd player which is implemented in many cards..and i dont want my PC running for 'watching DVDs'...ergo i do not need a DVD player or DVD/HDTV chip
USELESS !
- same with dual/triple head
Why should i connect my Parhelia (or current radeon 8500) to the TV ? My 19" samsung has a MUCH better picture than my TV...WHY ? Why do i need TV-out ?
Etc....etc... paying for stuff you dont need...that's how i see it...
I dont say that parhelia will be a bad card...nononoon....we will see how it's drivers are...how it performs...and i think we go towards VERY interesting times with the other upcoming cards (R300, NV30)
The parhelia displacement mapping is GREAT (!!!!!!) - but as with my radeon...who cares about truform, pixelshader1.4 ? Noone...who will support displacement mapping if only ONE card (Matrox) is able to do it ? I see the same problem coming up....
as someone stated it in the article....the parhelia will probably target people who want MANY features (see above)..esp 2D, DVD/HDTV..Home theater people....but it MAY lack when it comes to the basics. The basics for me are d3d/opengl performance. THIS MUST be right..and everything else i consider luxury where i can decide whether i want/need it or not. But i dont want to pay in advance for things i'll never need...
