http://news.yahoo.com/algeria-lost-contact-air-algerie-aircraft-aps-state-092354165.html

Spanish private airline company Swiftair confirmed it had no contact with its MD-83 aircraft operated by Air Algerie, which it said was carrying 110 passengers and six crew.
The company said in a notice posted on its website that the aircraft took off from Burkina Faso at 0117 GMT (2117 ET) and was supposed to land in Algiers at 0510 GMT but never reached its destination.
An Algerian aviation official said the last contact Algerian authorities had with a missing Air Algerie aircraft carrying 116 people from Burkina Faso to Algiers was at 0155 GMT when it was flying over Gao, Mali.
This is getting ridiculous!

Makes me want to cancel my flight to California in November. Four major tragedies in a span of a few months?

None of these are in the US.

Also, even in 4months "only" a few hundred people have/may have been killed on planes. In just a few days, that many people get killed in auto accidents.

Stop being paranoid, you're fine. Especially flying here in this country.

Well, given that there a couple of 100,000 flights a day, that is the only reasonable reaction.

Now when people ask "why do you jump out of a perfectly good plane" when I bring up skydiving I can point to recent events.

The plane sent its last message around 9:30 p.m. ET, asking Niger air control to change its route because of heavy rains in the area, Ouedraogo said.

So they went through a heavy storm...Perhaps lightning struck one of the engines and then it lost control and went down. Tragic, but not an earth shattering story. Media just wants to drum up paranoia amongst the population and get their ratings up.

Hopefully more happened than that, lightning striking an engine shouldn't shut it down. And even if it did, modern planes can fly just fine on one engine. Hell, they even glide pretty well without any engines.

Yes, lightning won't do jack to an aircraft and to date the longest glide was some 50 miles I believe. I have always said I rather be in a plane than rotter aircraft. LOL Screw the aerial screw. LOL

The reason aircraft crashes make news is because they're rare and the possibility that a few hundred people can be killed in one event.

To recap, there have been 4 plane incidents:

1. Missing Malaysian Air plane over the ocean thread
2. Shot-down Malaysian Air plane over the Ukraine thread
3. Crashed TransAsia Airways plane in Taiwan's island thread
4. Crashed Air Algerie in Mali (this thread)

I go to PPRN sometimes when I want to see all the theories of crashed aircraft. In was pretty good at discussing Airfrance.

I know a repair tech from one of the large national airlines in Canada and he says that some of the smaller regional airlines or charter airlines haven't always been as meticulous with their airplane maintenance as the big national airlines.

In fact, after an incident (in which luckily nobody died), they had to take over maintenance of the planes from a charter company for a while until the company got their crap together.

From what I understand, his views of small US airlines is no different.

Here's something to make you feel safer, there is a show called Mayday that is about plane crashes.

There are enough recorded plane crashes to make an entire show out of it!

I was reading about the Beachcraft B1900D on wikipedia and I don't recall any of the accidents being due to maintenance. I've seen a few of the shows before I think. Not sure if it was called Mayday or not. It's on Discovery, right? If so not all have a bad ending.

When you look at deaths by vehicle by miles traveled, planes are actually really close to cars. Sure there a shit-ton of flights daily, but there are a looooot more vehicle miles traveled daily.

That being said, I'm flying in 2 weeks with no fear. Nothing I can do about it!

That all stemmed from that cheerleader on her little safari. I just hope the meat went to villagers. I belive the rhino was tranquilized though.
