Another new build that won't POST post

Hope someone in here can help as I can't seem to get my new build to POST. It's my first build in about 5 years, but I had built 5 systems before that.

All new:
Q6600 retail
Gigabyte p35-ds3r
Crucial Ballistix 2x1gb ddr2-800
xfx Geforce 8600 GT
Corsair 520w PS

I'm down to just the above, hooked up on my desk. Hitting the power button (shorting out the pins for now) makes the ps fan, retail cpu fan, and video card fan spin for about 1-2 seconds then nothing. I get a brief click or crackle from the speaker I hooked up at the same time. I've tried the following things without any change in result at all:

1) removed from case as above
2) tried just one stick of ram, tried both sticks one at a time in all 4 slots
3) tried no ram
4) cleared cmos both by jumper and battery removal
5) reseated all connections multiple times each
6) tried no video card

I've also tested the PS by shorting out the green and black wire on the 24 pin connector and it spins and powers up fans and components fine.

My thoughts:
I have no other compatible system to test any of the components.

I had a hell of a time getting the cpu fan/heatsink to snap into the MB, but I don't think I broke anything. I suppose it's possible though. I took cpu out and looked around and could not see anything obvious.

I can't find the info on bios revisions, but I have to assume a board bought this week would cover the q6600, but maybe not.

MB DOA.

4 pin ps connector could be bad.

The ram might not want to boot at the stock voltage, and I can't get into the bios to up it. I've seen plenty of reviews where this combo works well, and it's on the gigabyte approved list, but who knows. I could pick up a cheap 1.8v stick of something after work tomorrow.

I'm thinking either MB DOA or ram needs more voltage.

Anything you can think of? Thanks.

Have you pulled the CPU to try and get POST errors? If you pull everything off the board and still no POST, I'd RMA it.

There aren't two seperate ways to clear the cmos. The correct way is to remove the battery...move the jumper...wait a few seconds...move it back....then replace the battery.

I thought I wouldnt even get POST errors if I pull the CPU? I haven't tried that, but I can try it tonight.

I'll try clearing the CMOS again, though I'm pretty sure I did it right.

And I did see the other thread also involving this MB. I've never gotten any beeps at all, but it could easily be a bad MB.

I'm going to try and pick up new ram and maybe even a new MB tonight.

Thanks.

It was the MB.

Tried new ram with a 1.8v and still didn't boot. Went out and bought a new MB just to check and everything booted up perfectly.

The correct way is to just move the "shunt" to the clear cmos position, press the power button, move it back and then start the system.

Removing the battery is just a cheap way to do it if you cant find one (or in some cases there isnt one)
