So it finally happened... I've had my 30gb 75GXP since December and it finally died on me 20 minutes ago. I was playing Unreal Tournament when all of a sudden it locked up and I could hear a scratchy noise coming from the drive (kinda like when you're shaving w/o shaving cream). I've tried reviving it for the past 20 minutes but it looks like it's no go. My mobo can detect it but as soon as it gets to the "Verifying DMI Pool Data ....." line it just turns into perpetual hard drive access.

Damn shame, it was an awesome drive. Any chance of IBM sending me a 60GXP instead when I rma this sucker?

that sucks. i've been running my own 30 gig 75gxp for a long time now w/out a hitch, and i've really heard very little bad press regarding them..but i'm sure defects are out there man.

last time i returned a drive, it was a WD, and it was ancient, so because they don't make them anymore, the replaced it with a newer , bigger one.

so, since i'm pretty sure IBM still makes them, you're probably not gonna get hooked up this time. but who knows!

Accually I think that IBM stopped making them, but I still think you will get another 75gxp.
I hope mine doesn't die...

Yea I posted 5 days ago.Same sh!t.
Your going to get a rebuilt 75 back...maybe...I havent seen mine yet...IBM could care less about the little guy, apparently. They said it might take a couple of weeks because it might come from overseas.
I bought a Diamondmax 40.
If you need to save your data ??? Run : chkdsk/f/p from command prompt. Do it a few times. It worked for me long enough to copy my drive over to my Maxtor. Then I partitioned the drive to 15 gig. It moved the data to a "good part' of the drive...It hasn't fully died yet.
Good description on the "shaving sound "ssssccccct...sssssccccccct.

If you can, snag IBM's Drive Fitness Test and run it. It will run a barrage of tests and it can fix problems like bad sectors. It has resurrected my 30GB 75GXP a few times...

I ran the DFT and it detected bad sectors. I don't think that's the only problem though, as that scratching noise sounds really bad, as in mechanically wrong. I'm going to go ahead and RMA it so I can have a new (read: refurb'd) one. Guess I'm stuck with this dual pII 333 until I get it back.

It was running on an Abit BX6-2, off the mobo's ATA connector. Nothing fancy there...

When it found the bad sectors, did you proceed with the low level format? I agree if it keeps making those noises I would RMA it...

Hmmm, IBMs are generally reliable, but these 75GXPs sound like a bad batch of drives. Nice performers, too bad though.

I've always bought Maxtor from day one and I haven't had so much as a bad sector, let alone drive failure. This thread reaffirms my belief.

The bad sectors I developed might have had something to do with running a 168mhz FSB and a 42mhz PCI bus speed....in my case anyway.

One of my brand new 30GB 75GXP's just bit the dust a few minutes ago. It is making the "scratching" noise....damnit !!!!!!! :|

The bad thing is I was running raid0 with 2 of them, and I hadn't backed up my email in a couple of days.
