Another RDRAM question

I know that in P4-based systems, RIMMs are run in a dual-channel configuration, and thus must be installed in pairs.

My friend has a P3 933/133 with the i820 and RDRAM, though (Gigabyte GA-6CX I believe), and we want to install some
extra memory. Right now, one slot has a 128MB RIMM in it, and the other has the terminator card.

I don't think the i820 runs RDRAM dual channel, so I should be able to just pop in a 512 MB RIMM, right? Especially since he has a 128 MB RIMM and a terminator card only right now...

Also the BIOS lists the memory clock speed as about 350 MHz - this is PC600 RDRAM, right? So I can probably save a bit o' cash by getting the new stuff of the same rating...

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Jake

P.S. I know that the i820 sucks, but I don't think it's worth replacing the mobo...

It appears as though his RAM runs as PC700 speeds. (350MHz x 2 = 700)

And yes, you should be able to put 512MB in there with no problems. I don't even know if they sell PC700 RDRAM anymore... I would just buy PC800 and see if they PC700 can overclock. If it can't, then the PC800 will just run at PC700 speeds. But the basic answer to your question is yes.

So let me see if I have this straight, because I was wondering as well...

On my Slot 1 VC820 PIII mobo I can have a 64 meg ramstick in one slot and a 128 in the other? (for instance)

But on my Socket 423 P4T P4 mobo I have to make sure that I install like speeds in pairs?
( For instance, 64meg/RIMM/64meg/RIMM or, 64meg/128meg/64meg/128meg?)

Does that sum it up or am I thinking wrong?

That is correct.

i820 = memory does not need to be installed in pairs
i840 = needs pairs
i850 = needs pairs
i850/rimm 4200 = memory does not need to be installed in pairs
i860 = needs pairs

Yeah, I looked around a bit and found that, unless you're looking for a 64MB stick, it's PC800 or better.

I'm thinking we may end up just getting a 256MB stick to add in with the 128 for a total of 384MB, because a 256MB PC800 RIMM costs around $100 while a 512MB RIMM costs around $300. 512MB would be nice, to be sure, but it's just too expensive. I suppose we'll replace the 128MB stick in a few months if the 512MB sticks ever come down in price... then we'll have 768, which would kick ass.

Anyway, thanks for confirming...

OK, last question...

on my Asus P4T (i850 I believe.) I know I have to put in memory in pairs, but can they be mixed pairs?

In other words, right now I have 64/rimm/64/rimm.

If I want to bump my memory is my only choice to go 64/64/64/64 or can I go say; 64/128/64/128?

Yes, they can be mixed pairs, as long as they are in pairs.

You can have 2x64 + 2x128 or whatever.
