Within the first 10 minutes, 10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. This is 100 percent of your recommended daily intake, and the only reason you don't vomit as a result of the overwhelming sweetness is because phosphoric acid cuts the flavor.

Within 20 minutes, your blood sugar spikes, and your liver responds to the resulting insulin burst by turning massive amounts of sugar into fat.

Within 40 minutes, caffeine absorption is complete; your pupils dilate, your blood pressure rises, and your livers dumps more sugar into your bloodstream.

Around 45 minutes, your body increases dopamine production, which stimulates the pleasure centers of your brain, a physically identical response to that of heroin, by the way.

After 60 minutes, you'll start to have a sugar crash.

How many sodas have you had today? How about your kids? As of 2005, white bread was dethroned as the number one source of calories in the American diet, being replaced by soft drinks.

The average American drinks more than 60 gallons of soft drinks each year, but before you grab that next can of soda, consider this: one can of soda has about 10 teaspoons of sugar, 150 calories, 30 to 55 mg of caffeine, and is loaded with artificial food colors and sulphites. Not to mention the fact that it?s also your largest source of dangerous high-fructose modified corn syrup.

Oh noes! Sugar is teh bad!

Know what's funny? Look up the glycemic index of pure table sugar. It's actually in the healthy range! And, even more ironic, it's lower than that of corn!

Usually 1-2 a day, sometimes I'll splurge and have 2 in a row. I like juices better, but juice is expensive

Damn, you say those things like you think they're BAD or something!
If Coca-Cola does all the things you say, maybe I need to start drinking it again!

the OP's post has made me go to the vending machine downstairs and grab a coke. Because I don't have any pop in my fridge... I never do. I don't have any pop in my entire place. I've pretty much stopped drinking pop, because when I would drink it, I was basically always dehydrated. I wouldn't drink much water at all during the day.

But seriously, I've always loved Coke, and there's a sweet release with each hit.. I mean, sniff, wait.. sip of the lovely liquid. I never got that from Pepsi, perhaps why I was never fond of it and practically refuse to drink it anywhere unless its the only pop to drink. There are certain foods I prefer to have pop as a side, like pizza or wings (can't order beer quite yet, otherwise it would be the preferred drink). But yea, Coke has always been my favorite pop, with Mountain Dew and its various delicious flavors serving as runner up. Vault, like Surge before it, is tied with Mountain Dew. Both have characteristics of their parent companies: Mountain Dew is even less carbonated than Pepsi, which feels less carbonated than Coke. Coke is more crispy than Pepsi (I imagine due to the amount of carbonation?), and likewise Vault has much more crispness than Mountain Dew. I love red Vault.

hmmm.. I  the pleasure release from food, especially from Coke.

ah.. it's fun to pretend there is a reason to enjoy calling Ohio home.

but yep, it's pop damnit. No other way to refer to it than pop.

I quit drinking sodas. I lapsed for the holidays, but have started quitting again. Quitting smoking was far easier... They don't have cigarette machines everywhere in the US.

but you get what, 20 in a pack of cigarettes? You happen upon a store with a craving, and you can fuel that craving for.. well however long you can make that pack last. With pop, its one at a time, unless you wanna carry multiple ones in a pocket, so you'll always have to happen upon a machine. Well, you could carry around a 12 or 24 pack, but that's just downright addicted. lmao

Speaking of ignorance, it seems like someone doesn't realize that Glycemic Load is far more important than Glycemic Index

(at least from a health perspective)

That's why it's far healthier to feed a person with diabetes a Snickers than a baked potato.

Well, since your profile shows you in Ohio...I guess you wouldn't really know about civilized states now would ya? After all, isn't Ohio one of those "fly-over states?

only us Ohio citizens can talk down about Ohio! You leave us alone dammit!

I fail to see how that is a bad thing?

i use to drink up to 3 cans of coke depending on the day. November 2006 i gave up soda completely. A few months ago i realized it was stupid to totally cut something i enjoy out of my life. So now i just drink a bottle of IBC rootbeer every few days as a treat to myself.

Like a poster above: What about diet "cokes" (it's not pop or soda, its coke)? Also, what about coffee and tea?

I was drinking 6L a day of diet drinks, but I was pulling long hours. I still drink at least six 12oz cans a day (all diet) and up to a 12 pack. Im starting to do the sugar free kool-aid mixtures in water though.

Diet drinks only really address the sugar factor in soft drinks. They don't really do much about the caffeine response, although by itself, it's not really a problem. Better than standard soda, but you could still be drinking better stuff.

Once again I reiterate: This article needs to stop railing against soda and admit that the problem is overconsumption, not what's consumed. Let us not forget that alcohol is a poison enjoyed in moderation by millions daily.

I agree about the overconsumption point. Consuming caffeine is not a bad thing contrary to popular belief.

When the show how its made was showing how aluminum cans are made, and they showed the step where the cans inside were sprayed with varnish, to prevent the cola from dissolving the aluminum.
That was enough to tell me , I shouldn't drink this stuff.

In it's pure form yeah, but it gets slightly diluted once in the stomach proper.

I drink only water most of the time. When I go out to eat, and thats rarely, I get fruit punch or lemonade, or possibly beer.
