Actually, other than the fat factor, all diet sodas are much MUCH worse for you than a regular one. Have fun.

On the lighter side, while I have no formal medical education, I still tend to agree with those here who are saying that the majority of the population can safely drink about a can of soda per day and not suffer any consequences.

You're an odd bunch.

Pop sounds rather British.

Soda is just dumb when there's already something it refers to, soda water.

The correct slang term is 'softy'

Here's a practical example:

'Beer?'

'Nah mate, I'm driving, just a softy thanks'

Come on people. If you sincerely believe the utter bullshit that Mercola and his cronies spew, then I have some lovely oceanfront lots in AZ that might interest you. Cash only, non-sequential small bills please.

Although, it's hard to argue that soda is good for you... Just cause a crackpot says it doesn't mean it's wrong. I used to be shamelessly addicted to Coke; I've almost comlpetely cut soda out of my diet and it's been great. I figured it would suck, but I haven't wanted a soda in weeks.

But I probably shouldn't have replaced it with heroin...

Well, I went a cruised that idiot's website.......and he's blatantly misrepresenting a LOT of facts to promote his own agenda...and products.

Take insulin and what he says:

"Insulin is, though, essentially a storage hormone, evolved over those millions of years of humans prior to the agricultural age, to store the excess calories from carbohydrates in the form of fat in case of famine."

While it's true insulin is a part of the conversion and storage of glucose into fat, the PRIMARY use of insulin in the human body is to allow the body to use glucose for energy. It's the transfer hormone that allows body cells to "ingest" glucose into the cell and metabolize glucose. That's its primary function, not fat storage.

If insulin were just there for fat storage, then why do diabetics need insulin shots to help them live? The answer is because without insulin being present, the body's cells cannot utilize glucose.....cannot take glucose into them to burn the glucose for fuel. Insulin is the transfer medium for glucose to move into the cell.

He also asserts that only with the advent of agriculture did man begin eating grains and potatoes. I guess he never realized that very early man would eat whatever came by or he found....and tubers, inc. potatoes, were a part of very early man's diet. Easily found, easily eaten....even raw. And I guess early man and his fascination with sugar doesn't count, either. Think honey. Very early man didn't have to have sugar cane fields or sweet beet fields to obtain pure sugar.....was obtained with honey.

Of course, he seems to imply man rode dinosaurs......man has been a hunter/gatherer for several millions of years?

The man's a crackpot trying to sell his books and dietary supplements.....skewing what is fact for his own purpose really points this out.

Wait a minute..... I live in Tucson, and I'm not aware of any beaches nearby. No no no, something's all wrong here, this doesn't add up at all!

Also, 90% of the bad stuff you just listed doesn't apply to diet soda, so I'll keep drinking it and be fine.

Within 20 minutes, your blood sugar spikes, and your liver responds to the resulting insulin burst by turning massive amounts of sugar into fat.

Massive amounts? You mean like... grams? OH NOEZ! If you drank 2 cokes a day, every day for 3 weeks ON TOP OF enough calories to fill your maintenance requirements... you would gain a pound.... maybe. But then, so would eating a number of things providing a roughly equivalent number of calories past your maintenance level.

Around 45 minutes, your body increases dopamine production, which stimulates the pleasure centers of your brain, a physically identical response to that of heroin, by the way.

Which is also a physically identical response to the consumption of FOOD, SEX, and any other activity which is pleasurable in any way.

After 60 minutes, you'll start to have a sugar crash.

Never had a "crash" after a single coke. Never "crashed" from anything containing caffeine or sugar. The only time I ever felt withdrawal symptoms from something like that was when I started drinking energy drinks a while back (have since stopped) and I would ONLY notice it the next day at the time I would normally be drinking. My body would say "Hey, where's our Guarana?"

Can we please get a stickied thread entitled "How to speak like an Aussie, by Dug777"?

I had a buddy in college who was from Australia... man I love your guys' slang. I think my favorite term is "Moisty".

Considering potatoes originated high up in the Andes, no way were they "easily" found. Grains and potatoes were probably a minuscule part of early mans diet...maybe not included at all. It wasn't till the Neolithic Revolution that any of those foods began to gain popularity.

I think author of the article if off his rocker too, but you cant sit here and argue that soda does NOTHING negative to you.

Of course if you take 120 grams of sugar a day you are on your way to diabetes, but if you limit yourself to a moderate amount you will be just fine. Why is this concept so hard for some people to understand? Is it that people must look for others to blame when they/their kids have health problems from too much sugar?

Exactly - there is no personal responsibility anymore. It's always someone else's fault, and as a result, they owe you money. You just need to pay a key (a lawyer) to access the safe (corporate bank accounts).

Within the first 10 minutes, 10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. This is 100 percent of your recommended daily intake, and the only reason you don't vomit as a result of the overwhelming sweetness is because phosphoric acid cuts the flavor.

Within 20 minutes, your blood sugar spikes, and your liver responds to the resulting insulin burst by turning massive amounts of sugar into fat.

Within 40 minutes, caffeine absorption is complete; your pupils dilate, your blood pressure rises, and your livers dumps more sugar into your bloodstream.

Around 45 minutes, your body increases dopamine production, which stimulates the pleasure centers of your brain, a physically identical response to that of heroin, by the way.

After 60 minutes, you'll start to have a sugar crash.

How many sodas have you had today? How about your kids? As of 2005, white bread was dethroned as the number one source of calories in the American diet, being replaced by soft drinks.

The average American drinks more than 60 gallons of soft drinks each year, but before you grab that next can of soda, consider this: one can of soda has about 10 teaspoons of sugar, 150 calories, 30 to 55 mg of caffeine, and is loaded with artificial food colors and sulphites. Not to mention the fact that it?s also your largest source of dangerous high-fructose modified corn syrup.

Article

Wow! And it doesn't even leave track marks!

If you want to play that game, technically it's likewise impossible to argue that breathing does NOTHING negative to you. As long as you're exposed to oxygen your cells are slowly oxidizing and wearing out. Every time you move you are wearing away on your joints, so just moving at all even does something negative.

Do you see where I'm going with that? Pretty much every single thing that we do has some form of negative impact as well.

Just to add a comment about that FDA warning letter: I work in the research field and do lots of things under FDA GLPs and FDA Warning Letters are not just some light, "Oh hey that isn't such a good idea" type of things. They are major, major, regulatory bitch slaps. A severe FDA Warning Letter can push smaller companies out of business.

Therefore if this guy received a couple of FDA Warning Letters this is a major regulatory/compliance issue, and essentially anything/everything he states should be disregarded.

You should read the ingredient list more carefully. I'm quite sure that most orange sodas contain caffeine, Sunkist definitely does.
