Under labor law, employers have to make sure that workers earn at least $7.25 -- the federal minimum wage for all workers. So, if workers don't earn enough in tips, employers must make up the difference and pay what is known as a "tip credit."

but Many employers do not.

Republicans want to do away with minimum wage altogether. Businesses will pay 25 cents an hour. Only way to compete with China and India.

I always tip my waiters/waitresses well.

I get made at the wife if she tries to cheap out and she has stopped doing it over the years.

that must be why there is a constant stream of stories about a factory complex shut down in a strike over increasing wages again.

If she doesn't like living on tips, she's more than free to get another job, go to school, etc. $2k per month with no college at her age is actually pretty good.

All minimum wage does is set the lower limit on value to the employer for hiring. With no minimum wage anyone can find a job with pay that matches their value as an employee, even people with no skills, and poor work ethics. As the government ratchets up minimum wage people are excluded from the work force.

Talk to some high school graduates about how hard it is to find a first job. The average age in fast food is now 29 years old, and it should be 19, a first job, not a career asking if you want fries.

The whole "tipped employee" pay scale needs to go away. Pay them the actual minimum wage...NO tip credit allowed. Let the workers keep their tips as...you know...actual tips for service rendered.

This. Having worked at a red lobster over 30 years ago, I know how hard people work in the restaurant business for relatively little money. I can guarantee the average restaurant worker puts up with more shit and shitty customers in one day than the average IT person does in a week.

Meh, I was a waiter for 3 years. As long as you don't work at shitty establishment and have a half decent personality, you'll be fine.

You have to really read your customers. Some people want to be engaged by their servers; other just want to be left alone with a steady flow of Dr. Pepper.

The $2.13 hourly rate was there so I could be taxed appropriately. I was supposed to declare every night how much I made with the tips so I got be taxed. Of course everyone lies on said amount. Even if you work a 10 hour shift, if you cant make $70 bux in tips you are doing it wrong.

Yay tip thread!

Don't listen to the posters saying they don't tip. The AT demographic is heavily weighted towards people who are not social superstars. Even though the interaction is forced, being "liked" by the server is more important than it is to non-recluses.

The odds are that if they receive good service from a personable server, they will tip fairly or even more than fairly, due to AT also weighing above-average on the yearly income scale. (Although not quite 300k per year as often claimed. )

When I was in Korea nobody tipped. You didn't have to, but I normally did.
