I'm going to be honest. I'm 18, and it's pretty damn easy for me to get a gun if I wanted. So trying to stop guns is not gonna do a thing.

It's all about how parents raise their kids in almost any teenage murder I think, including these school shootings..

You think it's easier to tell parents and "teach" them how to raise their kids, or will it be easier to restrict gun use? I am sorry, but lots of parents simply don't care, some don't know enough about their kids, etc. There's no way you will be able to tell parents to raise their kids right, cause there is no one set rule that determines right and wrong.

Since the parents are doing their jobs, there's got to be another way to deal with this, but how? No one really knows or he/she'll be famous. =)

Exactly, 50% you?ll make it back home when driving your car and 50% you?ll get into car accident and die, or live.

It's not two dimensional like that. It's fourth dimensional ie. completely random and outside of our human conception. That applies to everything...you can get killed just walking down the street.

Ok, quick poll:

How many of you can name the two kids who shot up Columbine?

Now...

How many of you can name two of the victims of Columbine?

That's what I thought.

Actually if kids are introduced to guns at a young age and are TAUGHT to respect the power of one then all turns out much better. I grew up hunting in a rural community. I got my first shotgun when I was 9 and was taught very specifically how to use it and definately how not to use it. In this way a gun is shown to be just what it is: a tool. Not something to play around with, not some mystical force or anything, but something to be careful with and not play around with.

How would that help at all? All your saying is that you respected the power to kill. I'm sure all these nuts do, but they want to use that power TO KILL. All the talk about respect is basic gun safety, which doesn't apply to these situations at all.

Uh, it doesn't have to be a fertilizer bomb. Fill a backpack with nails and drop a pipe bomb in there, I don't think anyone is going to walk out of the classroom its left in. Just use your imagination, there are more effective and accessible ways of causing death and destruction than just by shooting. Derenged people will stay that way with or without guns.

Get off your high horse, victims aren't facinating.. you really don't learn much from the crime by examining the victims.

bombs are nice, but ppl don't kill ppl in the heat of passion or rage by slowly building a bomb. Bombs are risky to make,.. and unreliable if made by a beginner. Its a $hitty arguement.

Zucchini, I can't name them either. But the fact that the press makes heroes (or anti-heroes... same difference) out of murderers only contributes to the problem.

I work with kids every day, and people who state that the media and press don't influence them (like I used to say) don't really have a clue.

I'm not on a high horse. I'm just depressed.

<< you guys arguments are now falling on deaf ears. >>

That?s why I'm giving up.

aRyll,

<< My child or not, it happens and it has to happen to someone. >>

You said it, so don?t blame for think you feel your child is expendable.

The 50/50 is just an example, you may, or may not get killed (doing whatever). Everyday you wake up, you may or may not get killed, it really is that simple. Unless you know something the rest of the world does not? The reason why I didn?t use a more sophisticated process or percentage as an example is because there is no way for me or anyone to determine that. It would be guessing at best. So chose to go right down the middle as my example.

You can try to justify your attitude all you want. I don?t care what you think, or how you would handle a situation if it were your kid, and I?m sure you don?t care how I would either.

Enjoy your newfound status.

In the case of these school shootings they were all planned out in advance. And as far as killing someone in the heat of passion that can be done with a knife or a baseball bat.

I posted this news article in the other gun thread, but it definitely is applicable to this one as well.....I love the one headline, "Not a lot of drive-by punchings"....link..

I have a good chance of fighting you off, especially if you are smaller(disgruntled geeks generally aren't huge). You could be a scrawny pathetic thing with a gun and take me out.

These shootings and every other related crime come down to one thing, RESPECT. Children are not taught to respect anyone, be it classmates, teachers, adults, or even their own parents. If they are taught anything, it is that they are the most important person in the world and that you shouldn't let anyone get in your way if there is something you want, and don't think about the person you backstabbed on the way up either or the person who's car you threw a rock at. I see it everyday, Kids make of people, harass them, or go out and vadalize property, etc. You know what the only thing that they think about even after they do it is, "How is this going to effect me?" Kids are not taught to think about how their actions will effect someone else's life. Basically, people just don't give a crap about anyone but themselves.
Looking at this shooting, on both sides of the spectrum, lack of respect caused this horrible tradgedy. First, the shooter was obviously not taught that you should respect other people and their right to live, very simple idea. On the otherhand, the people who made fun of him because he was different or whatever were not taught to respect other people's feelings, very simple idea as well. Now I'm not justifying anything that was done today by any means at all.
I'm just saying to parents, wake up and TEACH YOUR CHILDREN TO RESPECT OTHERS! I am so thankful that my parents taught me to care about others. Teaching your children a little respect will change alot. I'm also not saying that it was all the parents fault either, going to school right now I know that if I wasn't strong willed and had a good sense of right and wrong that I could have picked up some bad things, but then again I was brought up to be strong willed by my parents.
P.S. Sorry about any grammatical errors in this statement

Don't you think you are oversimplifying? Most children do respect one another, or else they'd all be shooting each other. Don't u think its more likely that the kids that act out are special cases? It seems the kid had problems and was picked on... many factors probably helped him come to the conclusion of fuxor it all.

The root of the problem is not only bad parenting, but those absolute f*cks who teased and picked on that kid every day. I think we are starting to see a trend with these kids, they are all the target of bullies. And with the mighty power of the gun(thanks to the media) they now have an easy tool for absolute revenge.

Ok, here's a question. What makes these kids easy targets for teasing and being picked on?

I work less than 5 mins away from this high school. On my way to work at about 9:25 am I watched about 8 El Cajon police and 3 Highway patrol haulin butt in the direction of Santana High school at the same time life flight and Sheriff helicopter were taken off at Gilespie air field. I would say pretty intense situation. I really feel bad for the families that lost kids today . I have 3 kids in school and this sucks so close to home.

<< I agree, the only root problem we can attack is bad parenting. >>

You can name the "root of the problem" all day, but that doesn't really do anything does it? The problem is I don't have enough money. The problem is not everyone is sane, the problem is there's not enough energy in California. So? You can point the problems out all day, but that doesn't solve anything.
