Sigh... so that makes 3 drives ive lost this year, and its not over yet.
2 of them were the "NAS" drive, and 1 was a barracuda.

The NAS drives i think put about exactly 3yrs... The barracuda about 4yrs.
These were 2TB drives, they had a fan right in front of them, did not put in sleep used on FreeNAS.

Well i guess i'll finish ending up replacing my 8 drive array with WD yellow's. 3 down 5 to go.

In all honesty 3 to 4 years is pretty good for failgate but that definitely puts them out of warranty. There ought to be models built with higher quality components that cost a little more for us looking for longer service life but I don't know if they are capable.

I sympathize with the OP as its frustrating when you lose a hd regardless of who made it. If they're under warranty I'd rma them and then sell the replacements when you get them.

A friend of mine just had a Seagate fail... it was a 7200.7. Bought it used off of someone on this forum, maybe five (maybe more?) years ago. It had a few bad sectors when it was purchased, but they didn't really increase. It had my friend's XP install.

It lasted quite a while.

Seagate is really a Maxtor drive. Maxtor is the worst hard drives in the industry ever since Maxtor and Seagate hopped in bed together the Seagate drives suck cuz its really a Maxtor drive which is the worst hard drive to get. Next time be smart. Buy a Western Digital or a Sammy. thx

no its really sad im having a higher fail rate on these "NAS" drives then the originals.

I used to say i loved seagate, and i got really lucky with them.
But i think i lost more drives in this year alone, then i have any other year ive been building PC's.

The last time i recall losing a drive was back when Maxtor was still in business.

I take care of my drives.
I always make sure they have a fan up front so they stay cool.
I don't put sleep on the drives because i heard by making them power on and spool like that, it can kill the motor, then having them spin all 24/7.
I clean the exterior of the drives every 2 months to make sure dust doesn't deposit on them and make them overheat.

I really baby them... yet these guys are all dying right outside the RMA period.
And its not by a lot... they went off RMA like April of this year.
I think that is what pisses me off on these NAS drives. I mean they couldn't even last that extra year like the barracuda did?

Just built a 6700k rig for my uncle and he wanted a Seagate 8TB V5 Enterprise drive in there.
Me personally, I haven't bought a seagate drive in years. My servers are full of WD & Hitachi drives.

Yeah. I won't touch a Seagate unless someone asks me to chuck it into a fire.

I personally have not been a fan of Seagate or Maxtor in a long time.

I've pretty much been a WD fanboi for a long time now, even if I have to pay a bit more as far as HDD's go just from personal experience.
