Yeah, it's more of a "check in a few times a day" kind of game - something to just do in occasional downtime.
Last year, I lived on campus, so I'd head back to my apartment between classes and play SimCity4 or some other game to pass the time. Now I'm off campus, so heading back isn't really cost or time effective. Ikariam and ATOT now occupy my time, or else homework when I've got the urge, or a sufficiently rested mind, to do it.
I've got 2 colonies now. I'll check in, answer any diplomacy messages, arrange trades, check my trading post (I'm a bit of a day trader there), make sure my research is set, allocate workers, get upgrades/construction going, and then log off.
Day trading - I leverage my trading posts' various ranges to get some good deals and make some profits. I just bought about 400 wine at 30 gold each, and immediately resell from inventory at 35 gold to another person. I usually prefer higher profit margins, but I still stand to make 1850 gold from the deal. I don't pillage anymore, so I am satisfied by smaller quantities than those in the AT-FB.
