We'll know for a fact, the next time Trump tweets, if he apologizes then we can assume Pence had a talk with him Logical assumption right?
Trump isn't Pence's son, so no. Your moral outrage is your moral outrage. Never forget that.

What lowered the bar is our gridlock. The voters want change... and cannot get anything done. Trump filled the void by being outlandish, but the desperation that allowed him to squeeze in already existed. This "new normal" is a symptom of a far bigger problem than Trump, however difficult that may be to imagine.

Oh, it's definitely a problem larger than Trump, and it definitely predates the Trump administration. However, I wouldn't call "gridlock" the cause. It's more like a symptom of the same underlying problem that is causing the lack of civility. While the conventional wisdom is to call this underlying problem partisanship, I think it's actually deeper than that. It's more like cross-cultural antipathy. We're in a culture war right now. It's urban v. rural, young v. old, secular v. religious, white v. non-white. This antipathy, which is inevitable in any remotely pluralistic society, has been greatly exacerbated by hateful propaganda, with the internet providing an unprecedented forum to perpetuate it.

Excellent post. The democrats lost by focusing on "identity politics" - AKA going for the LGBT or minority demographics as bad strategy. Meanwhile the Republicans sound the war drums for the evangelicals and nationalists. That well may dry up at some point for them.

We're getting pulled into a war that we didn't want and being forced into 1 of 2 sides that are far too narrow for many of our views any more.

Decades of divisive & relentless right wing agitprop & obstruction are responsible for that.

You don't get to decide what being a Christian is all about.

Equally, your politics don't get to redefine what being a Christian is. Your views represent a distorted view of what Christianity is. Your views as you represent them on this forum are not reflective of the Gospels and anything which Jesus preached. It's frustrating seeing how Christianity has been co-opted by the GOP and made to what it is today where you have so called church leaders supporting a man such as Trump.

Matthew 23:23 NIV “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.

I agree that the left's emphasis on identity politics has been to its political detriment in recent years. The left should continue to support civil rights and oppose bigotry, but with certain people on the left, it goes much further than that. Into an authoritarian form of hyper-political correctness which is likely what motivated a sizeable number of white voters to side with Trump. The left has an excellent message of economic populism, which is real populism, not the phony version on the right which is masking their favoritism of the wealthy over everyone else. This is the message that the left and the democratic party should emphasize most strongly in upcoming elections.

And I'll keep telling you to PM me. You should stop wasting your time.
Really, so you can threadshit all over a discussion claiming evolution is faith, but as soon as someone gets the tiniest bit close to what you hold important, what props up your tiny, tiny view of the world, you demand it to exit the pubic stage?

Nay, sir. You are a faithless coward for not standing your ground.

It's almost like he's not interested in honest discussion.

Shocking, I know.

@buckshot24: 1 Peter 3:15 compels you to give account of your confidence in your faith. You're being asked by several people here, and anyway if you're right you have nothing to fear from doing it in public.

Of course if you're wrong you get to spend aaaaaaaaaaaaall eternity screaming and thrashing and writhing and howling as your skin peels and your flesh roasts and your bones crack and your marrow sizzles and your eyeballs boil and burst in your blackened skull, over and over and over and over and over and over and over again, forever and ever, world without end, amen.

So, no pressure

Lovely God he has there, isn't it? I've spent more than a decade studying the Abrahamic religions and every day it becomes more and more apparently they're a memetic plague, a Bronze-Age death cult that got lucky way too many times through secular power (Romans for example) and never should have gotten off the ground to begin with.

Yahweh is found on the ruins of Ugarit, one god among many. Stelae (tablets with writing) saying "To Yahweh and his Asherah" have been unearthed. The whole thing's a theological mess.

Torn on this. On one hand, it sucks that he's embarrassing us (well, I can only speak for myself) on the public stage by acting like a 12-year-old assclown. On the other, he's not doing himself or the GOP any favors by his twatting.

Although I must say that after reading some stuff about the gutting of the State department that is ongoing--you know, the department that represents us to foreign powers--all this stuff seems less important. Some crazy shit and it's not getting enough attention.

No, the historical reality is that the country was far more politically homogeneous back in the day. There was less intra-party conflict because the democrats (eg dixicrats) were far more conservative than they are even now, and the political class (mostly white males of a certain cultural background) could all still eye to eye.

Unfortunately for those who demand political peace that's increasingly no longer the case, because liberalism and modernity happened. There are naturally two "sides" between that and the previous backwardness.

Rather obvious that race resentment is real populism, too.

Believing that a microbe could turn to people via genetic copying errors and selection is blind faith, absolutely. I will not debate theology with a professed Christian publicly on this forum. Ok with you? I think I've proven that I will stand my ground in that other thread which makes this just bizarre.

What I find absurd is everybody is here blasting the president about what he said in a tweet and over in that child molestation thread everybody is making light of it and making jokes about it.

I think the minor difference here is that he's the President of the United States... He sort of needs to be held to a higher standard than people on a forum...
