I wonder how many miles away the ship's radar would have indicated a oil tanker. Pathetic excuse of a helmsman or whoever was supposed to be watching the radar screen, something you would think is a 24/7 job on a military ship.

Well 500 feet ship can be hard to spot out there on the water....

The systems on that class of ship should see everything around them for qute some distance in both active and passive modes.

i thought our military was the best in the world again, or at least that's what Trump has repeatedly told us.

the problem with that is, i don't recall our Navy vessels being involved in crashes with commercial vehicles under Obama, W, Clinton, or Bush.

It's an established fact that the best Naval lookouts and radar/sonar operators are all transgender. Get rid of your best and you're left with the rest.

This is obviously a failure of Command. The Commander and Chief is weak, so his armies will falter.

On another note...I'm really actually surprised that such a systematic failure could happen on both sides. everyone is looking to the Navy vessel as the fault, but both sides were driving in a very big ocean. No one thought to themselves at some point "Oh look, there is a really big ship off the bow headed in my general direction...I had better keep an eye on that."..."boy that ship is getting really close...500 Meters I'd better keep an eye on it or at least plot it current track..." I guess no one on either side was watching?

Lastly...and not to hijack...but why do hooman's even drive large ships on the ocean anymore? Would seem like the perfect place teslas auto-drive. Trains and large cargo ships should have been the first to go driverless. would seem to me that there is no easier job for a computer than to not hit something on a road that covers 3/4 of the area of the globe.
