Another Victim of OCZ

Well, my brand-new Mushkin 240GB Chronos Deluxe went Tango Uniform within a few days. When I finally got around to trying to format it, in fact.

Edit: Update - it wasn't totally dead after all. It was a bad SATA port, or sub-standard wiring on the SATA dock.

Glad to hear it. I read a few bad reports on Hardforums about the Chronos Deluxe as well. I wonder if it's a similar problem. I even seem to remember Force GTs having a problem with shoddy connectors on their drives.

My OCZ Vertex 2 (120G) just died after a year of use. You know the story: BIOS doesn't detect it anymore.
I won't go for RMA, because I see no point to replace c**p with c**p.

good advice there. 10 bucks(or whatever you call your money over there) in shipping costs.. will make you a 100 for use towards another drive of choice.

I have the unfortunate displeasure of dealing with yet another failed ocz drive. This one hangs at welcome screen. I can move mouse but it will not ever finish logging in.

I believe what is happening is the drive is disappearing upon read of a certain location. I dont know if there is a solution besides simply replacing the drive.

I put the drive in another machine and copied all the important data off it. Ran chkdsk and it corrected some things but the problem is not solved. Updating the firmware does not fix it. A secure erase and reinstall might make it work again for a few weeks or months but what is the point in doing that?

Just get a non-OCZ drive. Anyone buying or relying on OCZ as of now is a fool and can't complain later down the road.

Personally I believe OCZ drives just don't work under certain hardware combinations or are more susceptible to certain variations in hardware (PSU, sata controller, chip set...). Would explain why certain people have no issue on for others drive after drive just fails.

If you haven't even tried a secure erase then you shouldn't be so quick to jump on OCZ. Heck, I even had a problem with one of my m4's. After a bit of research, I realized that leaving it at an odd angle wasn't conducive to drive stability, so I just formatted it (I know, I should have SE'd it) and it worked fine again. If the formatting hadn't worked, I certainly would have secure erased it before blaming crucial for my issues. The same process should apply for OCZ, or any other SSD for that matter. Is OCZ less reliable than others? Almost certainly they are, at least they have been in the past. But it's also likely that they get some issues like this that might have been solved short of an RMA.

Anyone else use the ability to point your "My Documents" folder to a separate location besides the system drive.

so, at the moment it contains 4.46GB of data in 3970 files under 904 folders (including subfolders)
At its root it contains 61 folders and 15 files.

I don't know why MS thought it would be a good idea to tell program makers to dump all their program config data into my documents instead of just making a shortcut to app data on the desktop.
It makes it completely useless for storing documents. Actual documents on the other hand contains 7 subfolders in its root.

Nice, what I did notice is that while my My Document's folder default location is pointing to my storage platter drive and I keep everything important there; a lot of games store their settings in the default "C:\Users\Username\Documents" location. Weird I know. But those type of things don't really worry me that much.

It is because MS explicitly instructed game makers to store saved games there during winXP. Before MS instructed them to store it in AppData.

Starting with Vista they instructed them to store it in C:\users\username\Saved Games\ which is actually a very very sensible place to store it... and yet nobody does that. (currently I got Darwinia, Lionhead Studios, and Distant Worlds stored there... And Distant worlds doesn't count cause it opens up a windows "file save/open" interface letting you save/load files from where-ever you please)

Also, I know I say C:\users\username\whatever but technically its $username\whatever. $username being a dynamic changeable link. So you can relocate the folder. (just in case someone tries to correct us about that) .
