Another Windows (98SE) trick, am I the last one to find out about this one?

I have the wheel button on my mouse set to close the active window, last night I figured out that when there are no open windows, clicking that button on the desktop will bring up your shut-down screen. Pretty cool huh?

So no shut-down icons or anything are required.

Same thing will happen if you hit alt+F4

This might get some more attention: I have a MS Intellimouse and if I use the MS Drivers for wheel action to scroll up/down, when I get to the top of a page in explorer it auto-backpages on me. I HATE that.

It does NOT do that if I use the native Win98SE drivers, only with the intellimouse drivers. Same behavior occurs, however, in WinXP.

Am I the only one who, after reading this, decided to test it out, but forgot that it closes the active window and will only bring up the shutdown screen if you're at your desktop? oops

Interesting.. my wheel mouse is alt-tab

It makes perfect sense. Close all the active applications and what is then in focus is... explorer, the GUI. Issuing a command to close explorer automatically brings up the Shutdown menu.

dman- i have the same thing happen all the time in Netscape too, especially annoying on AT where i'm scrolling all the time. Oddly, I only really notice it on AT, perhaps something to do with the coding here?
