anouther Voodoo zelot gone,well almost.....

After some modification repair my V5agp died a quick but painfull death. With only my wallet and instant availibility as my guide I went out and got a GF2 MX400. What I expected was about the same card maybe a touch faster,what a shock I was in for. The color and detail are lacking in the GF2,I see half of what I used to in my main game at this time WWIIOL. Distance detail is horrid,close up is not as bad but noticable downgrade. FSAA is not there or is at least a poor attempt at it. I know I didnt get the best GF2 out there but I expected more from it.

Once more I stand forth and hail the V5 as a dambed good videocard! Sadly it was my hand that brought the death of this one. If you own a V5 and have no problems and a high end CPU stick with it,they get better with every CPU upgrade. If you must upgrade go with a GF3,I say this not owning one but it must be better than the GF2?

Yea I guess I was expecting a little closer to a parralel movement to a downgrade. I was short and needed something ASAP though. Well its enough to get by on I guess,Ill push it as hard as it will go meanwhile. Hope I dont blow it up I really just need more detail at distance to be useable for my needs.

I always thought voodoo was smoother and prettier ever since voodoo Banshee versuse TNT. But wannabe techies or gamers thought TNT was better. Feature wise yes but quality wise hell no. 3dfx was right. Voodoo 3 really didn't need 32bit colors for F.P. Shooters. Their 16bit with 22 bit filter and LOD looked just as good as tnt2. Unreal engine games fly with glide so you have no worries. On top of that it was a pretty good 2D card and it was cheaper than tnt 2. Everybody though features but if you can't use it what's the point of having it?

I would like the ATI card if they could get their texture rendering problems fixed. Ati cards suck with Unreal T. and that's the only FPS game I play. CTF Rocks.

I'm about to get rid of my radeon and get me a kyro 2. I really don't want another GTS but maybe the Gforce 3. It's kind of tempting to get the Gforce 3. It does bring their 3d cards to another level compared to GTS. Still I'm don't think I want to shell out $350+ for 1.

It's really sad. I might just go get a voodoo 5 and turn my room into a oven. Decisions.

Quite a large majority of the cards are based directly on the nVidia reference design. This saves time on getting a product into the market. I'd doubt that you would see little, if any, improvement if you were to have gone to another MX400 from another manufacturer.

FSAA is fantastic, and you will crap your pants w/ the new speed..


I do miss my V5, but my GF3 is SHWEEEEET....


4 years ago I paid $300 for a V2, so paying $310 for a GF3 was easy..

I guess it all depends on what you do with your card.
At Sierra.com forums, many have &quot;downgraded&quot; from a V5 to a MX&quot;200&quot; and highly recommend that as a replacement to cure the poor performance that the V5 gives in many of the Sierra products. Even system moderators made the switch from V5 to GF2 MX200. Depends on the app I guess.

LOL. There's your MX400, it's lowly 10X7X32 score almost doubled by a regular GTS 64, and all the way doubled by a Pro. Not too mention the Ultra would be higher yet.

Your beloved V5 was $300 at intro, those MX clunkers cost $125, according to the article.

I also mourn the death of a voodoo zealot. Both my neighbor and I just got rid of our Voodoo's (me a V5, him a V3) and we both decided that the Radeon was our next bet. Oh well, it was good knowing ya 3dfx. I can only hope that nVidia does something with all that technology they bought off 3dfx.

Anyway, no offense Mykex, but you'll need some fine DDR memory to see any good performance out of a GeForce. ANY SDR card I can think of is a downgrade from a V5, with possible exception of Kyro2.

The V5 is an excellent card..I was ral sorry when I somehow also caused the card to die..at least I think I did it...all oof sudden it would no longer accel 3D hardware...I was not overclocking it...

FSAA was awesome with this card..period..I played Deus Ex 1024x768 at 2x FSAA..looked and played great with my piii700@945

When it died went to ATI Radeon 64mg VIVO..32bit color and image quality with no FSAA is better but I would take back the V5 with FSAA....

Personally I happy with a better image and slightly slower frames per second as long as cam e play is still smooth..I do not need 100 fps ...

yep there have been a few goofs who post here that a mx beats a V5, yep it does in 3 games out of 1000.

Last year at this time I said that the V5 was a hell of a card, and had better quality than a nVidia counterpart... With the exception of a couple people, I was flamed heavily. But now, 3dfx is a fan favorite and nVidia is the big meanie.

Was the V5 a good card? Yes it was. Awesome? No. At least it did not arrive in time.

NVidia still remains a &quot;fan favorite&quot; just that no one seems to care what happened to 3dfx anymore. Whatever they did they did to themselives. NVidia just pushed them along at one time or the other ATI would have eliminated them.

Well I have liked my Voodoo5 since the day i bought it and it has served me well...and still is! I have only ever had a GeForce 256 SDR and i've seen my m8's GeForce2GTS 32mb and tbh it looked like the colors were lacking depth, i dunno how to explain what i saw. I dont know if it has improved in the GF3, i do hope so as I think this is what i'll be buying next.

Well the thing to do is go get another 5500 and you can got one a lot cheaper than it was, I found a oem for $65 to put back incase mine dies but they are going back up now, One thing about the Voodoo 5500 is the higher you go on your cpu the better it looks, Just give me the 5500 over the GeForce 3 any day, But I know 10 or 15 years down the road I am going to have to eat that $65, Cause it isn't going to play the new games

Wont it always, But I did update the Asus 8200 drivers to the 12.60's and it is working a lot better, Went up over a 100 points on 3DMark 2001 but it is still in the back up

I love my Voodoo5-5500 AGP. When I bought ut I notice at least a 100% performance boost from my old Voodoo3-3000 AGP. This is good enough for me.

The only problem the Voodoo4/5 has is that the Texel fill-rate is not double the Pixel fill-rate as they used to do and in which the GeForce2 GTS does.
