Antec 180 & HD

I'm having difficulty with installing a Segate HD into the Antec P180 case. It seems that the screws that were provided with the case prevent the hard drive tray to insert back into the removable bay. The heads on the screw prevent it from sliding back in. Anyone have any issues with this before? Or any suggestions? The screws (i think) are made to suspend the drive, with rubber grommets below the drive, but I'm not sure about all this. Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the ATF.

Doesn't it show the proper mounting procedure in the manual? It points out in bold that the THICK side of the grommet should contact the HD.

I have 2 Seagate 7200.8 in the upper cage with no issues...not sure where you are having issues

Yes, I have the thicker side of the grommets up, however, aligning the screw holes on the hard drive with the ones on the tray prevent the hard drive from resting on the grommets. Hard drive is Seagate Barracuda 160 GB.

You've got to be doing something wrong, perhaps a picture would help.

I've got 4 drives in the bottom bay and two in the middle bay.

There are special screws that are in a box somewhere in the case. Those screws go up thru the grommets into the screw holes in the bottom of the drive...

The screws go through the grommets and into the screw holes on the sides of the drive. You should slide the drive into the bay, line up the screw holes in the drive with the grommets, and then insert the screws from the outside of the bay, through the grommets, and into the drive. Nothing could be simpler. The only care you need to take is to make sure that the thicker side of the grommet is UP. This means that on the upper side of the drive, the thicker part of the grommet will be on the OUTside of the bay, while on the lower side of the drive, the thicker part of the grommet will be on the INside of the bay. This should be common sense, but some people get it backward. Making that mistake will give less effective noise and vibration damping. The other common mistake is OVERTIGHTENING these screws. You want to tighten them until the drive is secure, but you do NOT want to tighten them enough to compress the rubber grommet. That leaves the screw head flush with the grommet. Nothing protrudes, so there should be nothing to prevent the the drive bay from sliding back into the case along its tracks.

Hope this helps. Let us know.

I was under the impression that i was screwing in the screws through the side holes. Since I've installed other hard drives that way (though mostly into Dell's with the slide brackets) I guess I assumed it to apply in this case as well. That should certainly take care of that problem. Thanks for the help.

Well, you ARE "screwing in the screws through the side holes." I still don't understand what you were doing that made it difficult to get the bay back into the case, but if your problem's been resolved, we're all happy!

The problem with putting the screws through the side (as opposed to the bottom) of the drive tray is that the screw heads prevent it from sliding back into the removable bay.

He was putting the screws into the side holes NOT the bottom holes... That's why he got the rolleyes.

So that I get this all right, are the screws with the threads only half way up the ones I should use for the hard drive install? Thanks.

They should protrude past the drive side of the grommet no more than 1/4" - no threads are needed on the part that is inside the grommet. Be careful or you'll catch another "rolleyes"... Do not tighten too tight as you'll lose the benefit of the grommet.
