Antec SX1030 or SX1040

I'm building a new system -- AMD 1.4 ghz Athlon -- TNT2 ULTRA -- IBM 40GB 7200 RPM -- Network card, sound card, cd burner and dvd-rom drive.

My question is do I need the 400W power supply in the SX1040 case or will the 300W power supply in the 1030 be ok. I may be adding another hard drive sometime in the future too.

Go with the the SX1040 the 400w will come in handy and will be more future proof,it`s always better to have more power then you need then not enough.

To be safe use the 1040. The added pertpherals are nit that much of a deal but the nature of the athlon draws alot of current. There have been numerous discussions on higher frequency athlons needing good ps to be stable. HTH

trade up the tnt2 ultra too. Ive got the same on my duron 900 and its the bottleneck. For you 1.4 gigger it will be a traffic jam!

I've got the 1030, and to be honest, i wouldn't recommend spending the addl. $50 on the 400W PSU. I have a AXIA T-Bird @ 1350 (which draws a lot of power) and 2 HDDs, 1 DVD, 1 CD-RW, 7 FANS (not including PSU fan), various expansion cards (eth0,scsi,sound,modem) GF2 GTS (OC'd) and i have not experienced any power problems. Chances are that if you need such a big PSU in the future it will also require a different connector. Save your money and get the 300W one.

I opted for the 1040 to get the 400 watt supply it is approved for the cpu speed that you want to use. seems worth the extra expense just for the peace of mind and future considerations.

Mem and NesuD said it; "future proof/for the future". I have the 1040; the extra $50 did hurt, but it is a lot of piece of mind. I'll have no power worries for the forseeable future, plus it's a P4-approved powersupply should I ever decide to go that route.
