Anthem Health Insurance Hacked: Up to 80 Million Customers Affected

As many as 80 million customers of the nation's second-largest health insurance company, Anthem Inc., have had their account information stolen, the company said in a statement. "Anthem was the target of a very sophisticated external cyber attack," Anthem president and CEO Joseph Swedish said in a statement posted on a website the company created for information about the incident.

The hackers gained access to Anthem's computer system and got information including names, birthdays, medical IDs, Social Security numbers, street addresses, e-mail addresses and employment information, including income data, Swedish said.

The affected database had records for approximately 80 million people in it, "but we are still investigating to determine how many were impacted. At this point we believe it was tens of millions," said Cindy Wakefield, an Anthem spokeswoman.

Dang, that's a major breach. Funny how the mention the breach not including credit card numbers, as if that's the most important thing. I don't care about credit card numbers, those can be replaced and the damage from a theft can be undone. I'm way more concerned about SS number, birth dates, medical id theft. You'd think in this day and age companies would get better about encryption and security.

Nothing is unhackable. Do you really think they wanted to be hacked? You want Anthem to be sure they can protect all of your data? Be prepared to double or triple your premiums because it will require a lot more software/hardware/IT time/knowledge than your average IT system admin has to stop a determined hacker or groups of hackers from gaining entrance to your systems.

They do not own all Blue Cross/Blue Shield plans and are for profit where many individual BCBS entities are private and not for profit.

Well after going 37 years without any of my cards or ID's stolen I finally had two different hits this year on two separate cards. Thankfully the monitoring on both cards was good enough to catch and flag the transactions. But this one is worse. SSN's of me, my wife and the kids (since they are in the system too). Bleh.

One of them recently was point of sale debits at a gas station an hour away from where I live. I'm sure there's video surveillance of who was at that register at that time and they can get a face.

The next to last time mine was hacked, it was used in Myrtle Beach. The cops got me pics, useless, and told me they get 30 new reports of card theft a day.

The last time. it was used in Alabama. The cop wouldn't even take a report. Said to call my bank.
