Let me run that through the Craig Pharaphrasotron 5000:

"Now that the truth is out, I'll stop defending this liar. But this is all still the fault of the vast right wing conspiracy."

Who do you think was the last politician to actually get away with something like this? Kennedy? Serious question...

I just wonder what makes them think they can get away with it. It's not like they can say "Well, look at everyone else who gets away with it" :hmm:

Well, we sort of wouldn't know the ones who are getting away with it, would we?

Sen. Craig would be getting away with it if he didn't try to pick up an undercover officer, Arnold Schwarzeneggar would be getting away with it as he did 10 years if some reporters hadn't investigated and found proof, John Edwards might still be getting away with it if the National Enquirer hadn't gotten ahold of the story, Anthony Weiner would probably still be getting away with it if he hadn't messed up on the security with this photo, Bill Clinton would have if not for Monica saving sperm on a dress and having massive right-wing money and an army pursuing him for years, on many false issues until they ran across a real one.

Who knows how many others are.

Kennedy was reckless as well - it was irresponsible.

Nixon was more irresponsible, abusing power for corrupt political motive - he was mostly getting away with it, too, if not for the freak accident of the taping system.

I hold all morally bankrupt individuals with equal contempt, whether in their work or personal life, it doesn't matter.
OK. That is your opinion, you are entitled to it.
And thanks to the relativist thinking of people like you, a good majority of the people we've elected to office across the country are highly flawed individuals many of us would soon replace if we had the chance.
And moral absolutist GOP voters elect politicians as pure as the driven snow. People are flawed, get over it. I elect politicians to govern not preach morals to me.
As Matt observed above, anyone who would betray their family would also likely sell out their constituents or their country. It's really not hard to understand, unless you are a relativist liberal.
Slippery slope argument? Check.

Shit can him.

Whether you believe what he did was *wrong* or not is not even the issue. The opposing party will use it as a distraction, and probably effectively so.

We don't need distractions...least of all now.

Fucking morons.

Let them use it as a distraction. All these GOP wannabes who want attention for their "platforms" going to have to get in line and wait for Weiner's weiner to get discussed first.

One more harm from his bad behavior is to give Breitbart a legitimate win, which will give him a larger platform and more credibility for his next slander.

Funny, I say the same about progressives

One day. One day you'll realize that some regular people do not like progressives for reasons other than brainwashing

Take a hint about integrity Weiner and what it means to hold office, scumbag.

I will not defend Weiner for his sexual gaff, but Spidey's posted cartoon is truly sick and distorted.

We should hold all politicians to the same high bar, but when Vitters still in office and the GOP did not kick out Larry Craig, and Ensign only resigned after a criminal type ethics report came out, it hard for Spidey07 to argue that the Dems and the GOP are not held to the same bar by the voting public.

As for me, I am more interested in the quality of a politicians public service, but still why should we the voters not demand both public and private moral behavior from our politicians?

In a way that is an excellent question. In my view dirty politicians have three major potential vices: sex, money and abuse of power. Of the three we seem to focus on sex the most (probably because it is the most titalating and also easiest to prove) but of the three, this has the least effect on a politician's effectiveness (assuming no blackmail).

While I love a good dirty scandal as much as the next guy, when it comes right down to it this scandal (and the shirtless guy on Craigslist) are pretty trivial and best left to the voters of that district.

That said, it is my projection Weiner will resign (probably under great pressure from above) within a week.

Too many politicians, too few vices.

I'm getting bored over here... let's spice things up already!

thankfully we have captain morality here..i'm sure you've never done anything wrong in your life..he sent pictures..OMFG ...who cares..

Bald faced lied to the press, The People and his constituents. That's the big deal.

All this could have been avoided had he simply said "yeah, I sent it, wasn't supposed to be public, but I goofed (giving more proof that he meant to IM or PM but twittered instead." I don't have much of a problem with sending the pics, no matter how intimate. BALD FACE LIE - I did not send that picture, must have been hacked.

What I have a problem with is the constant lieing.

Moral and ethical behavior in my business and my home are one and the same. AGAIN! It's not the moral behavior of the whole thing (I frankly don't care), it's the fucking bald faced lies when anybody especially when anybody with a lick of common sense knew it was a lie.

So, Clinton bald-face lied about Lewinsky, but was a damn good president. The people who impeached him ran the country into the ground when they got the reigns of power. Sounds like being foolish in personal life and lying about it does not preclude one from doing a great job for the country as a political leader.

Clinton was impeached because he lied to a grand jury. That is a felony in this country. Lets be clear about that at least.

It looks like he lied again, this time in his press conference: http://www.radaronline.com/exclusives/2011/06/weiner-sexting-partner-reveals-her-identity-reveals-%E2%80%98he-called-me-congress-phone%E2%80%99

Rep. Weiner said he was “deeply ashamed” and repeated 21 times that he accepted responsibility for his actions.

But he also denied he used government resources during his online sexcapades.

Not so, according to Weiss.

Speaking exclusively to RadarOnline.com, Weiss said she shared 220 messages with Rep. Weiner beginning on August 13, last year — and they were often exchanged during work hours.

In an explicit exchange on March 3 -- the same day he voted on a health care bill in the U.S. House of Representatives -- Weiner bemoaned that he had to end their conversation because he was “off to class.”

The casino worker, who said she once worked as a Democratic campaign worker, also claimed she had steamy phone sex with Rep. Weiner -- using a Government telephone.

Said Weiss: "After a while I said to Anthony, 'Why are writing these messages when we can just speak?'

"I gave him my number and he called me from his office and we proceeded to talk dirty for at least 30 minutes.

"A few days later, I tried to call him back on that number.

"But the number wouldn't connect to his office; instead there was a recorded message that it was an outgoing U.S. Congress line only."

Why should we demand private moral behavior from our politicians?

Because, like pro sports figures, they have the capacity to influence the behavior of millions of people by virtue of their jobs.

To which much is given, much will be expected.

Otherwise, when influential people behave badly, it desensitizes society and breeds extreme cynicism among the populace that the country and its leaders can credibly tackle big problems. Partly the reason why barely 45% of those eligible today actually vote.

I thought you were smarter than that. Obviously, I was mistaken.

Why should we demand private moral behavior from our politicians?

Because we elect them to positions of power over our lives to legislate and allocate our nation's resources and otherwise represent our interests. If we don't demand ethical and moral behavior by those representatives, we have no guarantee they won't betray our interests, and our democracy, our freedom and our very Constution are all false illusions.

Congressman Weiner's prepared statement was probably good for him, but the Q&A following may have been a mistake; I would wager there are now any number of Conservative bloggers trying to locate an under-age girl willing to say that she exchanged 'inappropriate communications' with the congressman.

As bad as his admission was, the new questions opened may lead to worse.
