Because we elect them to positions of power over our lives to legislate and allocate our nation's resources and otherwise represent our interests. If we don't demand ethical and moral behavior by those representatives, we have no guarantee they won't betray our interests, and our democracy, our freedom and our very Constution are all false illusions.
assuming they legislate and represent their constituents interests in the government, why does it matter what legal things they do in their private life?

I don't think texting some girls from craigslist is an indication of a willingness to betray democracy.

A willingness to lie about one subject suggests a willingness to lie or deceive about others so it isn't wrong to question those politicians caught lying and deceiving the public.

I don't want to feel like I have to keep that close an eye on my elected representatives for the same reason I don't like to do business with people who make me want to keep one hand on my wallet.

Taken to a more extreme level, John Edwards is now indicted for illegally misusing campaign funds to cover up his sexual exploits. The good news is, he wasn't elected Vice President. Once they lie, where do they stop?

I don't think texting some girls from craigslist is an indication of a willingness to betray democracy.

If this is all he did, I agree. Every case is it's own set of circumstances, and each should be evaluated on the facts. It's small crap, as far as public interests are concerned, and his worst nightmare is having to face his wife and family.

Should have just told the truth from the start, at that point I don't really see the big deal except from all the puritans. Maybe he wasn't up on his politician lie quota for the month.. don't they all have to get in about 200 by the end of the month?

Clinton was impeached because he lied to a grand jury. That is a felony in this country. Lets be clear about that at least.

He was acquitted in the Senate and never charged with a crime. Innocent until proven guilty. But he did lie on national TV about not having sexual relations with that woman. The point is none of it prevented him from being a great president, the only one to properly run this country since Ike.

Idiot.

WTF is with all these guys? How stupid do you have to be to text pix of yourself doing insanely embarrassing stuff? Esp after the CL guy in NY got caught....
He has let down all the left that looked to him as a liberal bombast to counter the idiot teabag loudmouths on the right. Sad.

Should he resign? Does he carry himself as some holy Xian family values moral authority like so many on the R (who like to dabble in the whores and teh gaysecks)? No? Then don't care. Plenty of others stay in office and survive. He will too, but a shell of what he could have been.

Why is there a fight over who are bigger whores, D's or R's? Stupidest argument ever created.
The only real shocker is when a pol doesn't cheat on his wife. Both are shameless. You both lose.

Congressman Weiner's prepared statement was probably good for him, but the Q&A following may have been a mistake; I would wager there are now any number of Conservative bloggers trying to locate an under-age girl willing to say that she exchanged 'inappropriate communications' with the congressman.

As bad as his admission was, the new questions opened may lead to worse.
True, but I give ol' Wiener props for one thing. Once he did own up and stop telling lies, he faced the music and took his lumps by doing the Q&A. Lots of pols would have stopped at a prepared statement. I still don't like him, but give the Devil his due.

The piece of shit has to go.

Congress has single digits approval rating. These people aren't our lords, how dare they become so complacent as to lie straight to our face. I wonder how much further Congress approval could fall before the whole place would be razed to the ground. I wonder if France has some guillotines available for lease.

Exactly. There was a time when the shame would be so overwhelming it acted as a deterrent to this type of behavior. Now the motherfvckers brazenly admit it and 'regret' it only when caught, then defiantly state they are staying in office anyway, almost challenging us to run up there and beat the shit out of them.

Our civil society has devolved to such a morally bankrupt complacent state that we actually expect this type of behavior from our politicians. And some of us even excuse it... "well, as long as he's serving MY interests, I don't much care". Really pathetic what we've become.

I don't care that much about politicians personal lives, but anytime someone has a skeleton in the closet they can be blackmailed. I was a personal reference a few years ago for a friend getting a security clearance and many of the questions that I was asked were aimed at making sure no one could blackmail him. IMO this a solid reason that we should demand pols be squeaky clean.

Nancy Pelosi Says She‘s ’Deeply Disappointed’ in Weiner, Calls for Ethics Investigation

According to Politico, Pelosi wrote:

I am deeply disappointed and saddened about this situation; for Anthony’s wife, Huma, his family, his staff and his constituents

I am calling for an Ethics Committee investigation to determine whether any official resources were used or any other violation of House rules occurred.

behavior unbecoming of a congressman?

if he didn't break the law and didn't sexually harass any women, I'd say it's a private matter between him, his wife, and his mistress(es).

if anyone is dumb enough to look to a politician as a moral guide point, they deserve what they get.
hell it seems like he is behaving like a regular congressman

Politically speaking, getting in front and on top of the investigation could very well turn out to be a highly shrewd move. By leading the charge, Pelosi could theoretically massage the investigation and message the results in a less damaging manner perhaps. Obviously she would not be in total control (not sure how an investigatory committee is formed exactly), but given her position Weiner might have had to lay everything out too her, and strategically she calls for the investigation?

In short, strategery.

I think living in NJ has given me a warped sense of reality when it comes to ethics in politics.

unless our politicians have literal skeletons in the closet or are part of a multinational conspiracy to sell organs on the black market, it barely rates news coverage.

Like your present governor Chris Christie, who has repeatedly done far worse and repeatedly LIED about it and yet has prominent Republicans asking him to run for President.

I think the bigger question is, what does Christie have to do with Weiner lying about sending pictures of his hard Wiener to his mistress?

JFK did, and Carter did pretty well on policy. They say no modern President was as successful getting his agenda passed than Carter.
