yup, this is an organization I want my kids affiliated with. I'm not saying the BSA should be disbanded, but I do believe since a lot of parents cluelessly sign their tykes up without knwoing the whole story. Parents should be given a booklet that breaks down the whole Mormon tie in, and how they are pretty close minded as to who they want to be a member. Fill parents in on the bad sh!t, and if they feel learning how to camp outweighs the possible bigotry, then fine let them sign their children up. Are there good troops? sure, but the overall picture makes this a group I couldn't see myself supporting.

Meh. There's a sordid underbelly to everything in this country, including the country itself. People are hypocrites every time they go to church, watch TV or buy a gallon of gas. Most people simply aren't ready for the truth.

I'm still married compu-geek!!!! with a son that turns 4 tomorrow

There is a huge amount of black Scouts in our area. I support that completely along with all colors.

Right now, I have a great tan, so I'm not exactly white like the crayon either...LMAO.

The BSA must have really changed since I was involved. I'm an Eagle Scout and if I had children I would definately encourage them to be involved. When I got to college, I pledged and initiated into APhiO because of their Boy Scout tie-in. When I was a Scout I knew several gay Scouts, met plenty of black Scouts & leaders, and was friends with plenty of athiest Scouts. I wouldn't say I grew up in a really "diverse" area either. The Troop and Council leaders really make or break the BSA in an area...and I had a great group of leaders. I'm still friends with many of the people I knew from my time as a Scout (more than the people I went to HS with), made some memories that still stick with me (hiking sections of Sandy Beaver Canal Trail, backpacking in New Mexico at Philmont Scout Ranch, etc...)

I wasn't going to dignify compuwhiz by saying if he had actually read the thread he would see that I am married also.

The Atlanta troup is the largest troup in scouts and it is mainly made up of young men with a "non-white" proud heritage. The BSA also have urban troops set up. In 1926 there were 248 all-Black troops. (that's a lot considering that was close to the beginning of scouting).Note the date, and how many race problems were not solved nearly that early on. I feel bad for persecution of any race or religion throughout time.

Okay, so now it's just an ad for BSA. Sigh. Watch Penn&Teller's episode on the BSA for a summary of how many of us feel.

Eagle Scout here as well. I enjoyed it. Learned a lot and traveled. I think the only thing they don't permit is homosexuals, which I don't condone. I think they should just say no pedos instead, because I think that is/was the worry. I think you can be any religion, I remember there being church related badges for catholic, jewish, etc. I'm not big on religion I liked the outdoors activities.

BTW-What were you ranting about again? Who exactly is anti-boy scouts?

there is really is no other group that gets a large number of people interested in camping/outdoors especially since many live in cities. i fear if the BSA went away many would not be exposed to the outdoors and have no appreciation for the environment.

i was in the scouts, loved going camping. went about once a month. we were a poor troop, so we really roughed it. it was funny when you'd see other scouts with so much camping gear/junk, while we just had vietnam army surplus gear.

later, we learned one of our scoutmaster's son was gay and had basically been excommunicated by his dad(former marine drill sergeant), very sad. regardless, he still got an eagle scout.

imo, it's more of a don't ask don't tell policy, not the witch hunt you guys make it out to be. we had people of all faiths(hindus, muslims) and nonreligious folks as well. those folks just couldn't become an eagle scout. it didn't seem to matter. no one made a fuss about it. now if you wanted to preach your beliefs i'd imagine you'd be gone, but at our troop we weren't concerned about gays or religion or politics for that matter. our biggest concerns were camping pranks and food.

it's sad boy scouts can't go on military bases/public camp grounds anymore due to federal laws, but hey there's enough people to privately support it. what it really hurts is the poor troops that don't have the funding to go to those expensive bsa sponsored events.

All they'd have to do to gain full access and support again is abandon their stance of hate. Then they can have all of my tax dollars they want, as well as my unflagging support.

Now you've gone way overboard. This is a free country and groups are free to have their motives. There is no hate here. Just "because of your actions/choices you are not welcome".

Hate is to actively harm others. There is no hate here so stop the PC agenda.

A lot of people, Boy Scouts aren't the problem it's the people behind the orginzation. Watch Pen & Tellers Bullsh1t show on the BSA it's an eye opener. If I ever have kids I'll just send them to the Boys & Girls Club, they have pool tables, ohhh and they're not bigots either.

How are two magician's opinion on an organization an eye opener? How are the scouts bigots? Or is that just an insult one tosses around? Because it's not an insult to believe in doing good.

Except that the BSA is a private non-profit organization and doesn't take any of your tax dollars. And as such, it can set its own membership criteria, as upheld by Supreme Court decision.

The propaganda and doublethink is strong in this thread. If you don't like the BSA, don't support them and don't let your boys join them. Or, even better, start your own scouting organization and let as many gays and atheists join as you want. Isn't freedom wonderful? And you're complaining...

Private organization. The can do whatever they want.

As a fan of techno and the club scene I have been openly discrimated against for being straight. I don't get my panties in a wad because of it.

OMG! The bartender isn't getting me a drink! Gee, wonder why.
