Most all scouts go on to be some of the best and most productive members of society.

They are full of everything that is great about leadership and being a good citizen.

The only people full of hatred are the bigots who are saying the scouts are bad.

Multiple serial killers have been eagle scouts.

I'm an Eagle Scout and I'm going on to be a teacher. I'm also an agnostic, and I believe that scouts should allow homosexuals. It's a difficult issue for me, but it's why I'm not involved with them and why I turned down a (paying)position with them.

I'm hoping that we can make something change before I have boys of my own.

edit - I'm also not a serial killer, and I just LOVE that people who are against homosexuals in scouts have brought this up again for the 50th time.

I have no problem with the boy scouts. What i have a problem with is the fact they receive government assistance. If you excludes gays or atheists, you should not have the right to government aid because it is discriminatory. Otherwise, you can exclude anyone you want.

discrimination is discrimination right?

You are throwing around the word "bigot" wantonly. Who else is a bigot in your eyes? Someone who condemns the religious zealotry of the Taliban? Someone who hates KKK members? Give me a freaking break.

Yes, they are restrictive as to who can be a member, but who cares?

are you serious?

Harvard is restrictive about who can be a member of their school, those bastards!

Restrictive != discriminatory

Harvard discriminates against stupid people, it's not their fault they were born that way!

I think the bigest problem with the Boy Scouts is the upper management (as it is with most organizations). I wouldn't be suprised to see that people who hate/dislike the Boy Scouts would include the ~97% of members that do not receive the highest rank of Eagle Scout. I am an Eagle Scout and it was not an easy rank to achieve. It took years of dedication, camping, learning new skills, and leadership to obtain that rank. While I was interviewing for jobs out of college, it was interesting to see the number of interviewers who were interested in that I had received the rank. It sets a benchmark that person x has certain skills that have been deemed good prognosticators of success.

As with any group of people there are bad apples that spoil the image for others. By saying xx Eagle Scouts were terrorists, axe murders, psychopaths, et al, is irrelevant since you can find those people in all parts of the population. Check out this list for notable Eagle Scouts.

Each Troop is dominated by the influence of its Scoutmaster. I had a very dedicated Scoutmaster who wanted the best out of us and taught me how to push myself to do the very best I could, and not settle for "good enough" which is prevalant in today's youth.

I wonder if the BSA will take away your sons badges after you get him a prostitute on his 18th birthday.

Have any names of the most productive and best members of society that you speak of?

Then it's equally pointless in pointing out that BSA members turn out to be great members of society as society as a whole follows the same correlation.

Yes, please refer to my above post or click here

Many senators, astronauts, and members of the armed services were Eagle Scouts. But like I also mentioned in the above post, there are/were people who strayed from the ideals that the scouts represent (ie Marion Barry, aforementioned murders, et al)

I was using "xx" as a placeholder, since its probably a small percentage of people. Lets stop the generalizations and get to real numbers. To date there have been ~1.7 million Eagle Scouts since its founding in 1917. Even if there have been 20,000 people who got their Eagle Scouts, but then thats 1% of all Eagle Scouts. Like I said before: [The Eagle Scout Rank] sets a benchmark that person x has certain skills that have been deemed good prognosticators of success. If there was no worthwhile meaning in scouting, people would stop participating. I learned a great deal including: tying knots, indepth first aid, how to be resourceful, pushing your self to do the best, being a good leader, appreciation and respect of the outdoors....

I don't think anyone is arguing that they don't teach valuable skill sets. The argument that has been put forward is that the BSA should not receive government support nor government discounts as long as they have discriminatory practices. They can do whatever they want with their private fundings but as soon as they receive public funds or public savings, then it's problem.

I guess the BSA doesn't really have a big problem with solicitation of prostitution. Oh well.

Care to point out which of those are *not* rabid righties or religious nuts?

Yes, i see Michael Moore there, that makes one.

That's a ridiculous thing to say. Did you miss the astronauts, the physical anthropologist, Dukakis, Gordon Gee, etc etc?

It's pretty funny that L. Ron Hubbard was a boyscout though.

Notable members has nothing to do with anything. The problem is the policies of the organization.
