ok, i read this whole thread and i just have to post. i cant take it anymore.

BSA was founded using a very simple belief structure most commonly associated with the way our country was founded. a belief in god. people bashing on this moral code are the same reason that the pledge of allegience is not said in school anymore and could get me fired for wishing a co-worked a merry christmas. before i get called bigot, i have travelled the world and had friends from every major organized religion and sexual preference. i am not quite as naive as the OP seems to be. call me worldly if you will.

point is that people cant look past the outside of things anymore.as a scout, i knew several atheists and many homosexuals. nobody ever asked my sexual preferece or if i went to church. the fact is that i believe in God, but make no effort to push that on other people and i never attended church as a child. nobody i know in more than 20 years of scouting has been kicked out for not believing in God or for being homosexual. not one. we received no govt funding and our budget consisted of donations and what we raised.

the scout oath has not changed since it's inception and i would turn in my eagle badge if it was made more pc. you want to know what is wrong with the BSA? what is wrong with you? can you just not skip the part that has to deal with God? Can you not just let young men have a good time and learn something worthwhile. people in this country have been turned into pussies by all of this pc garbage. our forefathers would disown us if they could see us now.

You're asking the wrong side those questions. Ask the boyscouts why they won't let you skip the part that has to deal with God. I got kicked out for just quietly skipping that part. It's generally the religious folks that make things tough...the rest of us are perfectly willing to just completely remove all reference to religion on our own time.

The Boy Scouts hate gays. The gays hate Boy Scouts. An epic battle is brewing: pocket knives versus giant black dildos, who will be the victor?

Oh man, this sounds like a good movie. What do you think it would score on Rotten Tomatoes if it was directed by Spielberg?

You know they don't allow gays right?

They dont allow girls to join so whats your fricken point?

"The Boy Scouts of America maintains that no member can grow into the best kind of citizen without recognizing an obligation to God. In the first part of the Scout Oath or Promise the member declares, ?On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law.? The recognition of God as the ruling and leading power in the universe and the grateful acknowledgment of His favors and blessings are necessary to the best type of citizenship and are wholesome precepts in the education of the growing members."

I took my oldest to his first Scout event this weekend... here are a few thoughts:

pros
1) It was a great experience for my kid. He learned tons, made friends, had a blast.
2) It was a good experience for me. I met a couple of dads, had fun, learned some.
3) There was a good blend of structure and unstructured activities... the camporee had a Lewis and Clark theme, but scouts had to walk from event to event, and could do so in any order.
4) It was a low effort camping trip for me... the had staff/volunteers cook and clean, I had lots of time to bond with my kid. Very helpful for a father of a tiger/cub. Funtime was maximized.
5) not overtly religious, didn't offend my agnostic sensibilities

cons
1) it was a bit expensive... I spent roughly $80 for a 1 night camping trip [$40 in fees, $20 in gas, $20 for meals to and from] I'm willing to say that the money was worth it given the advantages listed above. We've also spent about $70 on scouting uniform stuff. While we're able to do this, I'm sure many are not.
2) food was pretty lame (for this event, they had dinners prepared for all the packs)... the peanut butter sandwich table kept us alive. This is a minor concern, but I was worried until I saw the PB station.
3) considering one of the things that is great about the event was companionship, I regret that the BSA restricts who can participate. Our pack leader gets a bit pissed when he thinks that his young daughter will have to be excluded from BSA programming at some point.

It doesn't matter, if atheists or agnostics are excluded no government assistance/discounts for you.

Our Troop does this yearly AND it is 2 Deep Leadership which means NO BOY should EVER be left ALONE with just 1 leader unless it is his Father or Mother of course.

BSA has done a great job to stop child molestation.

HA HA HA "2 Deep". Man the sexual references keep coming. Yes folks, i'm 23 years old and i'm making a double entendre reference on "2 Deep". Yay maturity As for the rest of this thread, I give it a meh. I find it incredibly ironic that, despite BSA's not accepting gays, their uniforms don't exactly scream "manly".

How can stuff like this not remind people of other religious nuts in the world? These idiots are saying that I'm not a good citizen because I don't believe in gods? Fvck you Boy Scouts of America.

i would like to know what site you got that crap from. because its is not what duty to God means. let me correct you.

The Meaning of the Boy Scout Oath
Excerpted from page 45-46, Boy Scout Handbook, 11th ed,

To do my duty to God . . .

Your family and religious leaders teach you about God and the ways you can serve. You do your duty to God by following the wisdom of those teachings every day and by respecting and defending the rights of others to practice their own beliefs.

Hmm for being anti gay I always considered the Boy Scouts as kind of a gay organization, you know, grown men running around in Lederhosen covorting with young boys out in the forests around camp fires.

As much as I think a boy scout-like experience (camping, friendship, etc) would be beneficial for my son (he's still way too young to think about joining) I will not be allowing it. I can't support or look the other way when an organization is discriminatory. Religious zealots can kiss my ass.

Actually despite my crude comment about the BSA in few posts up I actually think it's a good organization, now if they could just ferret out the Fundies who seem to be in control of it it would be even better.
