Electronic stability control is so good that's it will become mandatory in 20122012.

Anti-lock brakes are still optional?

Anti-lock brakes has longer stoping distance than regular brakes.

i see Anti-lock brakes good option if your area has lots of rain/snow.

When is it worth the upgrade to Anti-lock brakes?

Antilock brakes give you the ability to steer while you are trying to stop and keeps you from going into a skid. You essentially have more control over the stopping.

You've got to be ***** kidding me. Mandatory ESC? God forbid we fix the problems with the licensing system that lets any moron be legally allowed to drive, instead, let's try to cover up the problem with electronic nannys.

Goddamn ignorant politicians.

To an inexperienced or unskilled driver, they don't

Aren't anti-lock brakes standard features on the majority of new cars these days? I don't understand why ESC or ABS systems need to be mandated by the government. Market demand for these features has already made them more commonplace.

even if you're "good," what we are capable of in a panic situation with the radio masking the tire noise and the sun in your eyes is sometimes different than what we tell ourselves we can do based on messing around in a parking lot.

although i could modulate lockup on my old car thanks to 30K+ miles a year over a mountain pass with lots of blind curves, my drives are a lot more relaxing now that i know i can just pound the crap out of the brake pedal and trust the car to do the work for me.

I think it's a proven fact that some people don't know how to drive.

Which is why I said that we need to fix the system that is currently letting those idiots get licenses.

"in my day, we didn't have ESC/ESP standard on our vehicles. we actually drove them!"

good thing you have plenty of vehicles that are truly driver's cars

My problem with the electronic aids is that far too many people think that the fancy electronics make the car invincible. We had a snow storm here in Seattle last winter back when I still drove the Mustang every day. People in cars with much better traction than that Mustang were getting stuck because they were relying on the gizmos to save them, but I was slogging through with the traction control disabled (dang thing cuts power when I need that power to control the car) relying on just the "old-fashioned" clutch-type limited slip differential in that old live axle.

Electronic aids are great, but too many people count on having them. What people don't realise is that if ABS comes on, or if traction control or ESC starts to intervene, then they've already screwed up. They're a safety net, not a license to get stupid. People seem to think that these things can magically make them unable to have an accident and then end up driving beyond themselves and beyond the conditions (which results in them sliding beyond the guardrail).

Once ESC is mandatory, it won't be an upgrade. Once you have the ability to modulate individual wheel brake channels you're most of the way to ABS. All you need then are some wheel sensors and maybe another controller. I suppose they wouldn't have to include it, but it would be nonsensical to leave it out. In fact, I would bet the two systems are tied together at some level to maximize the effectiveness of the ESC.

For now, I would say the upgrade to ABS makes sense if you might resell the car. Stuff like that can help you get rid of it when you go to sell...
