Anti-static wristband and grounding

How do people ground themselves with anti-static wristbands?

Connecting to the case would make sense if the power supply was plugged in--else you don't get grounded. But it seems that there must be a better approach than having the power supply plugged in.

Suggestions?

Thanks

You do not need to wear one. I build PC's on my carpeted floor wearing socks.

Unless you live in a place with very dry air that builds up static, it doesn't matter. If you can scuff your shoes across the floor and sneak up behind and shock your little brother where you live, then I would consider using soem kind of anti-static protection.

Yeah, don't worry about it. Like John, I've built, upgraded, and troubleshooted all the PC's I've worked with on carpet with no extra percausions (except grounding myself before unplugging power supply). Never fried anything yet......*knock on wood*

I prefer to knock on the metal part of my table to discharge any static before diving in. Does wood work too?

Let's say you DID live in a house with lots of dry air and that static electricity was a problem ....

THEN IN THAT CASE, how is it best to ground yourself with a wristband?

I guess I'm just not macho enough to risk $1,000 worth of hard-earned money by being unlucky. ;>)

Wrist bands don't REALLY work. The cheap ones don't ground better than the circuitry does (oops), and the good ones have resistors built in so it doesn't ground too much through YOU, and melting your socks to the carpet (well, melting the wrist band to your arm). Personally, I've always lived by the same rule these others do, and maintain contact with the case, at least when I remember to. I leave the computer plugged in, to ground the case, or else it may ground through the motherboard to the floor, or something - at least that's my theory ;-),. But my brother seriously zapped my mother's computer the other day (and he's worked in electronics manufactoring for 10 years) - it arced from the board to ground - grounded something that wasn't supposed to be.

But you ground the wrist strap by plugging it into the ground hole of a power socket.

And, you aren't risking a thousand dollars of equipement, unless the stactic arcs from you to the CPU, and which happens to arc to the HDD, which happens to arc to the video, which it turn takes out your sound card, etc.... You see the point - it's be worth a grand to see the laws of physics suspend for an instant, assuming you live through it. One, maybe two components would be fried in the WORST possible scenario.

I wouldn't touch the guts of my PC without my ESD protection. I killed a hard drive once and learned my lesson, its just not worth going in without the protection. You can damage components and not have problems until months later. Just because you put in a component without protection and it seems working fine it doesn't mean that you haven't done damage to it.
I've even seen other people kill components by not using their ESD protection.
But if you guys can risk putting several thousand volts through delicate circuitry then go for it, no loss to me.

the wrist band have resistors in for a good reason "your safety" they are there so that you are not directly connected to ground, they reduce the risk if you touch a live( mains voltage part ), and to leak away the static charge as well .

For my part I use an anti static mat correctly connected to ground ( you can get wall outlet plug that are designed to only connect to the ground ) the with a RS ( radio spares in the UK not tandy/ radio shack ) quality wrist strap I consider this the only way to work with electronic equipment.

I do not have the pics now but you should see the damage caused to chips due to static discharge ( this can be in excess of 20kv )

I build servers for a living... if I had to sit there and wear a wristband chained to the floor everyday and look like an idiot... well.. I'd quit.

There's no need for one, just touch the case to ground yourself, or the desk you're working on. Simple as that.

I was really cautious building my first computer, I always made sure to use the anti-static wrist band........but after I took a break and came back, I forgot to put it back on and I had just took a stroll through my carpeted house, with socks too, and the heater was on as well:Q I grabbed the video card, installed it in the AGP.....and realized I didn't have my anti-static wrist strap on. I freaked out, thinking I might have just killed my video card. I was relieved that the video card worked just fine when I booted up for the first time. Now I'm not too cautious about killing stuff with ESD.

Why bother? Just clip your lead onto the chassis of the machine your working on and you don't have to worry about making sure your touching the case. Also you'll have two hands free.
Whats the big deal, I've got my strap sitting here on my desk, it fits in my pocket. Its not some big clunky chain contraption that I need to dedicate a briefcase to. If theres a chance this little thing can save your componentry why not use it? The guys in the electrical dept at work (working on PLC's and stuff) even use them (thats where I stole mine ), those guys wouldn't be caught dead without them.

I'd list the specs of my 7 puters at home on my LAN too but i'm too lazy.. there's no need to KEEP your hand touching the case or something to ground yourself. Just touch it once if you walk away and come back to make sure you're grounded. If you're not moving around all over the place you're not creating any static and you won't zap anything.
