I'm skeptical that it could work but if it could, we should. Those of you who say we shouldn't 'fvck with nature' -- we're already fvcking with nature. We need to learn how to manipulate this planet fully so we can, someday (proabably within a century) fix up the planet and balance ourselves with our environment. The reality is, we're not going away, and we're not going to shrink back to a state where we have a trivial environmental impact, so rationally we must learn how to manipulate the envrionment so we can coeexist with it in a reasonable state.

You honestly think we will ever be able to manipulate the planet/weather to suit our needs? To "fix" it up? LOL

Rational would be predicting changes and peparing for them.

Think it? I'm confident of it. In fact, I'd say we'll have complete control (assuming we continue to progress as we have) in 200 years, at the far outside. I think we've already begun.

Probably electricity.

so they have a really long extension cord out into the ocean?

Wireless extension cords

any idea how much power these puppies can move?

it's an april fool's joke. you can't transmit enough power to power a laptop through the air, or if you can i'm sure it'd burn things in the way.

When did we begin? With the already failed attempts at decreasing hurricane intensity? With the realization that we have an effect on the enviroment?

You may be able to limit the effect of humans but weather manipulation on an earth scale will never be realized.

Will we be able to change earth's rotational speed? Stop natural atmospheric changes? Speed and slow ocean currents etc.......... Account for all implications present and future when such changes are made?

Who gets to decide who gets what weather?

When we started global warming in the first place. Now we've begun things like carbon sequestriation, air scrubbers, etc...

No reason it cant, except the amount of energy we can harness as a species.

Will we be able to change earth's rotational speed?

That's a few orders of magnitude more energy than weather manipulation.

Definitely.

Who gets to decide who gets what weather?

That's the real problem: politics. We figured out cloud seeding a half century ago -- and it worked, but we couldn't figure out the legal snags.

We haven't done it yet, doesn't mean we can't. The fact is, science has been giving us more and more control over our environment. We can stop rivers and harness their energy, make a room cold in the middle of summer, contain a disease when it could have killed millions. Given enough time and the right circumstances, I don't believe there's a limit to what we can do.

You are talking about global weather control right?

Weather and rotation are connected........as are all the other things I listed. You cannot change one without affecting another/ all.

i'm not sure man....f'in up with nature never gives good results. Leave nature as it be, human beings already lost to earth nature so many times (bajillion ? ) by being defiant. People needs to start thinking how to live with it, not against. Sphere homes ftw?

You're making a false assumption. Yes, I'm sure that the weather is affected by the rotation of the planet, to some degree, BUT, that doesn't mean that to change the weather we have to change the rotation of the earth.

True.

I think you're overstating our prowess though.

We can barely predict the weather 24 hours into the future, let alone control it. We have to understand it on a very profound level to even consider controlling it.

Granted, you did say within the next 200 years.. and our weather prediction is certainly better than it was even 50 years ago.. I'm still skeptical though.

Anything like that would require so much energy.. we're still in the dark ages as far as energy goes.

Considering that we put out about 1/2 as much power as a hurricane today, and we put out about twice as much energy as we did in 1970, IMO, it's not unreasonable for it to be within human reach in a couple of centuries.

horrible idea. it'd totally ruin the wildlife of the area and increase the overall water temperature over time. it's kinda like having a slow fan on a radiator on a watercooling system.

I'm pretty sure a sudden 15 degree water change would kill all but the most hardy fish.

We can sure pay for it.....But can we get our money back if the "thing" won't work??

You said "manipulate this planet fully".

If you are going to do that you need to be able to compensate for every variable.

<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.livescience.com/forcesofnature/050225_wobbly_planet.html">"For instance, the motion of the jet stream and the counterclockwise-moving winds around low-pressure systems in the Northern Hemisphere (opposite in the Southern) are manifestations of the Earth turning underneath the atmosphere.

It may be that rotation and weather are so intricately tied that it may not make sense to speak of cause and effect. The Earth slowing down may drive a change in wind patterns, which causes another alteration to the rotation, which then kicks up more wind, ad infinitum."</a>

and that will effect a million other variables.................

It isn't about just the earth's rotation even though you seem focused on that little bit...........

That's great, I didn't say the rotation of the earth doesn't affect the air, I said we could compensate for it. You're fixating on a relatively small point in my argument.
