I don't know about you guys but it really makes me think when I see stuff like this. We really have no idea about anything when we find items that were not thought to exist anywhere else for thousands of years.

Also, how the hell does someone get into this type of work? I think its really awesome to be able to discover these things and then try to figure them out or decypher them, or whatever. I'm sure it's not all playing with ancient artifacts, but still. I'm sure you have to be pretty damn smart too.

I remember seeing some show on Discovery channel or somewhere about that device. Very interesting stuff.

Did that civilization get destroyed by the great deluge that many disparate creation myths make reference to?

The great flood has absolutely nothing to do with creation. It is a known event referenced by cultures on opposite sides of the globe and backed up by archaeological evidence.

You guys all realize that when the Antikythera Mechanism was lost, for a long time we had no way to stop the dreaded Kythera...

It has to do with the creation myths often found across the world; not the creation of the circle of the earth, but the origins of, for them, modern society.

It is a known event referenced by cultures on opposite sides of the globe
but in different manners.

and backed up by archaeological evidence.
Ok... which myth was supported by the archaeology? Please provide a reference for the blind peer reviewed study you are referencing as archaeological evidence.

No ya don't....you do NOT get to use a work of fiction to prove anything.
Using the Bible to prove mythology is as bad as using Wikipedia for college papers...

I DO believe in the "great flood" however, but I'm a bit skeptical of the whole "Noah's Ark" bit...

Not necessarily. It's as advanced, so it says, as an 19th century swiss clock. I don't see anything that indicates you couldn't make a 19th century swiss clock as far back as antiquity. Basically its just gears.

The genius is in the mathematical calculations that would go into making the thing work. Its quite possible there was an Einstein equivalent who basically just figured out the equations. Making the device would have been just a matter of precise craftmanship.
Astronomy was a very important science in antiquity, and a lot of effort was spent on it by alot of people. It's only the Christian dogma that held back scientific advancement of astronomy for the thousand years plus after the crucifixtion. It was kind of daunting when you could be burned at the stake for theories of planetary movement.

Basically, this just shows how dark the dark ages really were. And how much time was lost in scientific advancement due to the influence of the Catholic church.

The world was a much more advanced/better place before Christians came and ruined everything. They don't call it the dark ages for nothing. You don't need an advanced unknown civilization to make that. The greeks or romans were good enough.

Completely agree.

Think of if we had ~1000 years more to advance when Einstein was around.

The catholic church controlled Europe; what's the rest of the world's excuse for not having hover cars?

Europe was the most advanced in the world tech speaking. The Middle East had Crusades, which were caused by the Catholic Church in part, so they were fighting wars for a lot of that same period. North and S America were closer to Egyptians in their advancement. China was fairly advanced, but I'm not entirely sure what held them back.

Without question though, the Church was directly responsible for regressing world knowledge technologically and scientifically.

China was happy just the way it was and massively stagnated thinking they were the best anyone could ever be till europe came and slapped them around. The middle east actually surpased europe scienficially and was going good, but then they all went batshit insane and took massive steps back like europe did only even worse. Everywhere else never really made much of themselves compared to rome.

If it wernt for the church and the unifying power of it to bring men and nations together, the muslims would have conquered europe a LONG time before the first (and only successful) crusade in 1096.
