You shouldn't be hitting a kid that young, there's just no arguement for it. So I don't see how this should be a discussion.

I agree, for a child that young; spanking is not an effective tool.
However, I am against spanking laws; it's a parenting choice.

I don't know how you'd even begin enforcing such a law.

How do you enforce laws against giving your 2 year old whiskey to drink? It's still illegal, and should be; it allows the government to send a clear message and take action when proven.

Parents aren't born knowing how to raise children, and this law makes sense to me. It's a little like how there's no reason not to wear a seat belt, but some need a law to get them to.

Or perhaps more relevant, a law requiring a child safety seat.

Well, is there a difference between spanking (1-2 swats....maybe 3) and beating?

I used to swat my daughters on the butt but it never hurt them. Heck the diaper/pull-up provided too much padding

I've heard a guy upstairs at my apt. complex, though, wailing on his kid (who is probably 4-5). He had his balcony door open and you could hear the smacks and the kid screaming. I thought of intervening but, hell, you never know how nuts someone is.

But, I remember getting spanked by my dad when we were kids. It wasn't so much the spanking as the anticipation of it that we dreaded. Then we'd fume and grumble for a few hours, muttering stuff under our breaths but we learned not to do something a 2nd time.

The problem, conjur, comes in when you don't realize it hurts. The other side of it also is that it doesn't help either. When they are that young, you simply should not hit them. Of course, once they hit 4 they are fair game

Spanking can be useful but it depends on the situation IMHO. I remember once talking to a teacher of mine and him telling me that he only spanked his son one time in his entire life. He spanked him because the kid bolted out into a busy street at the age of 2. He said the pain of a spanking at that age would be mild compared to the pain of watching his kid get hit by a car or the pain felt by his child as a car runs him over.

He said after that spanking his kid never again ran into the street and he never again spanked him. I think he did the right thing but I can also see how some people can go out of control with spankings. Yet I don't want government in the role of telling parents what to do when it comes to discipline. When discipline turns into abuse then I feel that government should intervene but don't tie the hands a of a parent. Crappy parents will always be crappy parents regardless of the law and good parents will always be good parents regardless of the law.

Agree, same thing happened to me. Got spanked, didn't do it again.

While I would never spank a child that young, I can't help but be against this law. It should be up to the parent how to raise or discipline their child, not the government.

Wow, me too. A couple swats on the butt is not abuse. More importantly, it's not the government's job to tell us how to raise our kids.

Although I don't know if I would use spanking as a parent, I don't like the idea of banning it - especially since spanking that causes injury is already covered under various abuse and assault laws.

But in all honesty, spanking a kid covered by this law is not about discipline, parenting, or anything other than frustration and anger. Like it or not, a kid under the age of 3 has virtually no concept of right and wrong, and is not going to learn anything constructive from being spanked. I would fully agree that any spanking of a kid that young constitutes abuse.

I think so. And the monkey.

I can see giving a couple swats to a very young child in extreme cases when severe action must be taken quickly and with seriousness... like in possibly dangerous situations. I mean, you can't always sit there and give logical rationale to a 2 year old. But once they get older than 5 or 6 there's something creepy about it. They should be learning to reason a little by then.

now I'm against abuse a child example throw them against the wall or beat the hell of them with broom even worse try burn them.. matter fact I witness this kind of stuff through out my life... my mom kicked my a$$ because I try to be let say "fck you, keep fcking with me I would knock you out" so my respond from my mom slap the crap of out me. do I hate her for it? no I respect her for it. I have 2 kid I do my best not to spank them but they do get out of line especially with there mother... because sometime the physiological bullsh!t some of this string be spiting never work all the kid, some kid are straight out a$$hole.

P.S most this people try pass this kind of law probably never had kid for them self.. but hey what I know I'm criminal.

Yeah let's just let them touch the electric outlet, and the hot pan instead of slapping their bottoms, or wrists....

Let me quote this again.

Parents aren't born knowing how to raise children

Carl Marx, is that you? The obvious solution to your dilemma is that government knows best. If government should dictate, maybe it should raise the children too. You have to take them away at birth or they might get spanked. Or they might be taught some right wing lunacy that government objects to them hearing.

Where does this intervention end?
