Antivir Not Updating ?

I just noticed, by my AntiVir v9 (free) has not updated for the last 3 days. I looked in the log and it says there was an error updating for all 3 of those days and now when I'm trying to update, it takes forever to scan for updates and when it starts to download, it gets part way and then slows or stops before fully downloading the file.

Anyone else having this issue?

Happens all the friggen time... which is part of why I dropped Avira. You can manually update off the Avira website.

*Could be the free edition's servers. Grab the latest definition update from their website. Also, try a product update from the main application.
*Are you blocking the pop-up? There is a slight chance that the method used could cause it not to update properly.
*Is your license valid? (the free version still has a license with an expiration)

Are there other good, free antivirus programs? I can get McAfee Virus Scan through my school for free, but I'm not sure how 'lightweight' it is.

You can try setting the updates for when the servers won't be as busy but that's the only complaint I have had about Avira and they get a lot of flak about that on their forums and others but it is free.

I have only had a issue with it taking awhile around 10 minutes just to find the updates but once it does I have yet to have any issues downloading them.

Mine just updated today. I'd rather use Antivir with definitions 3 days out of date than just about any other free A/V. If forced though, Avast would be my next free choice.

Avira does have a forum where they do address update issue, sadly it is possible to mis set avira in terms of updates, and with the freeware version, avira always stumbles badly when they have major upgrades.

But you can go to a site like major geeks and download the updates there, the file is huge, 20+ MB, but it always works.

Yeah, it's been fine the last few days. I think part of it was trying to update in the middle of the day. I guess the auto-update, since it is every 24 hours, it kept trying to run it in the middle of the day and failing.

http://www.avira.com/en/compan...rus_is_turning_10.html In case you missed this and are considering buying Avira, Suite or AV - 5 days left. For AV that will be 27$ for 22 months subscription. Not too bad even with MSE, Avast 5 in mind.

The reason I use AntiVir is because it is free. Yeah $27/22 months or I could just pay $0 till my existing license expires or they renew the free one. If it came down to it, I'd just take the McAfee VirusScan from my university (for free) if AntiVir stopped being free to me.

The update servers for our free Avira AntiVir Personal are currently under heavy load due to a huge update that gets delivered. Even if we are delivering with 8 GBit per second ? whereof up to 1 GBit per second is used by IPv6 traffic alone! ? this results in a slow update process for many of the free AntiVir Personal users. The situation should get better over the weekend, it already got better this night for a few hours.

We already increased bandwidth and made further optimizations to our servers. Also we?re working on a permanent solution to better serve the users of our free Avira AntiVir version ? this may take a few weeks though.

Also, you can manually download the updates from their website here: http://www.avira.com/en/support/vdf_update.html

(Once downloaded, Open Avira, Click Update tab, and Manual Update).

I noticed this too. Anoying because every time I reboot my computer I'll get the notice. It's like if it wants me to do something about it.. It's suppost to update automaticly!

Sadly there does not seem to be any other decent free AVs out there. AVG was good before but now it's crap.

Change it to notify after 20 days of not updating or something like that.
