This thread has been continued here due to excessive length (and discussion of old deals being prevalent).

OneCare doesn't qualify:
3. Submit proof of previous ownership of a retail (boxed or downloaded), stand-alone version of any McAfee, Trend or Norton software product by mailing the Original CD or Original UPC barcode on box, or the Original Title Page of manual. For downloaded products, please enclose your electronic receipt from the original competitive product's purchase. *Products that were pre-installed on your computer or supplied by manufacturer (OEM) do not qualify.

Will not slow your system down like Norton or Mcafee

For 12 years now I have never used an AVS for this reason. Does it not slow a system down at all or just a little?

Ive always elected to be a smart internet/e-mail user over the performance hit given to a computer by a AVS (And Ive never gotten a virus)

Good deal, thanks OP. Kaspersky is good to go for rebates. I got in on the deal at fry's, and got this same version for free also. However, I did have to pay tax, so this is a better deal.

PS Oh great, I got to pay tax here to. ($4.15) Still, great deal!

Well, kaspersky uses little resources unlike norton. Obviously any added program is going to slow a system down a little. Takes up memory and cpu usage to run(duh!).

Kaspersky is great. I use Kaspersky internet security, which is pretty much antivirus with a bunch of other internet related security stuff. Its definitely better than norton. The best antivirus programs imo are NOD32 and Kaspersky. Those 2 programs both catch the most amount of virus' if you check out reviews. Norton is good, but it does slow system down a bit. Although ive used norton for like 5 years also and I really cant say it slows it down as much as some people claim. It does seem to slow bootup times and stuff like that tho.

Also you said you don't use a virus program? Why? If you have not got a virus yet, that is just luck. I guess you can try and be smart about it, which I am as well. I dont see your point though. There are some websites that inject a virus/spyware just by viewing it. I dont see why would you take a chance just so you can save like 10mb memory and .1% cpu useage. Id never take a worthless risk with my data.

Thx OP. In for one.

Off topic, but does anyone kow how good (or bad) is Computer Associates's eTrust EZ Antivirus? That's what I'm currently using.... got it for free after MIRs a while back.

Heres a few antivirus rating/review/comparison sites. Generally, I would never use a program that was not on the top 10 list. Id say youre taking a risk unless its one of the top detectors like nod32 or kaspersky.

How do you know you have never gotten a virus? You may have gotten lucky and just not gotten any that are destructive but might have turned your machine into a 'bot...

Is this only one license? Some AV packages give the ability to install on more than one seat (sometimes 2-3).

I would highly recommend a Symantec Corporate product. I've used it for 6 years now and it's so minimal, you'll never notice it.

Kaspersky and NOD32 use very little resources.

Its kewl if that works for you but, I personally would never use a free program no matter how good it is. Whats the point if it cant catch everything? Those free ones give a false sense of security. If you check reviews, nod32/kaspersky/norton have the highest detection rates over any others. Ive never even heard of those so im sure they have far lower detection rates. To each his own tho. If I were you Id jump on this while its free AR.

I've checked those sites too, and Antivir tends to be pretty high on the charts. It may not be 100%, but it does hit around 90%. Plus, I'm a college student, so I don't really have money to much money to burn.

Just because it's free doesn't mean it's a bargain........free crap is still just crap.

Exactly. A key logger or Trojan doesn't ruin your computer. They just run in the background and report all your keystrokes (to your bank, your SS# from credit checks, etc.) to some greaseball whose going to sell it for tons of $$ and you'll never know it.

And before you say that you keep an eye on your processes and memory usage, understand that rootkits have been created since 1995 and they run without being traceable, for the most part.

Time to break down and get into the new millenium.
