If this crashes components of my clean personal system, I dare not think of what it will do to the somewhat lesser configurations of some of my clients.

My advice is: Download a trial version first or buy this only at a place where you can return it.
I cannot begin to tell you how many people I encounter that state "I have (insert # of years) experience". I am also a consultant with 10 years of experience. In addition I own a local retail computer sales and service company. The fact of the matter is that I service hundreds of pc's each and every month, and I cannot recall the last time I have had an issue with Kaspersky AV or IS crashing a system. I'm not saying that it doesn't happen, but I just cannot fathom how you've had so many issues.

Let me continue, in that I am ISV, MSFT, ... certified and a member of CTIA - what is your point in pushing this software? Also, you personally clearly cannot service "hundereds of PCs every month" - what's up with that? And do all of these "hundereds of pcs " run this $hitt software?

This is a pretty hot deal.

You have to keep the file antivirus and other settings at medium, (or just add scanning for all files) because at high, it would frequently take 100% of my CPU and slow the system to a crawl.
Norton never got that slow for me, but the last version I used was 2003 and I think 2004 is the one with the huge slowdowns and activation issues. Kaspersky does detect much better, it would be good if it could repair better.

Is the subscription for Kaspersky just for updates or the entire program? I have seen cases were the program with an expired license completely stopped working, not just loose the ability to update definitions.

Just how good is the KIS firewall? I've had trouble finding readable reviews of it. I'm still using the pre-Sunbelt version of Kerio. "Leakproofing" my pc is important to me, as is blocking incoming attacks (even though I'm behind a router/firewall box).

Thanks for that link. I'm concerned that it's missing unknown process start control, but it looks great in other respects. That seems to be a big hole, if it allows unknown programs to run. In the "vendor's response" notes, Kaspersky said the newer version, already out, does better.

I still haven't received mine from systweak, I sent them an e-mail about it the day after I received memzipper and didn't receive the KIS key, but no reply. I guess I'll wait a week and e-mail them again.

Not sure on this, it is integrated tightly from what I have read, but it still maybe modular enough to allow for the other stuff not to install, you will be able to disable them for sure, but not sure if it will just install the A/V.

I bought Systweak Photo Studio three days ago and still haven't received the Kaspersky information yet. I sent them an email but I'm not holding my breath!

Make sure your email went to systweak and not their payment processor, who sent the activation emails.

You're knocking Kaspersky, and I am knocking you for knocking it. The only thing I am actively pushing is your level of competence. You have a bad experience (or two) on your own pc and you assume software will react the same on others. With all of your "experience" you should know better. Then again certifications do not define a true technician either. :light:

OMG <insert name of software here> crashed so I am going to boycott it forever. I guess I should refrain from using Windows then?

Please take a look at the statement I've bolded for you up above. I/we/my office check in at least 50 pc's per week, plus we do service calls and remote support. Malware removal is big business for us. Again, I cannot recall the last time I've had an issue with Kaspersky.

Thanks to you all for a great and useful thread of deal suggestions
and informative commentary.

It's caused me and a couple friends to give KAV / KIS a try as a result of some of these
free after rebate & relatively-cheaply priced deals.

The latest free-after-rebate KIS 6.0 Fry's deal certainly seems like a good one
for anyone wanting a nicely integrated anti-virus and firewall solution; I jumped on it!

I wonder if this will give you problems or make you look like a pirate if you
have a *single PC* that just happens to be set up to occasionally selectively boot
say either WinXP or WinVista and one registers the same activation code for
KAV/KIS for each boot configuration of that PC.

It wouldn't make sense for any vendor to say that you must to have
distinct licenses for the same computer just because you may want to switch the OS
you use on that PC from one to another, though if you switched frequently enough
I wonder if it'd seem to cause a problem.

It seems like the right solution would be to just store license configurations (or better yet to install most everything) to a commonly accessible storage area NOT on the
boot drive and then have it just be unconcerned with what boot drive you've used.

But since so many things (for no good reason) like to write things to the registry & to the
boot drive that vs. installing where you tell them to install that rather messes up
application portability when boots the same PC to different OS variants even though
one wants the same installed applications (anti virus, office suite, browsers, document
tools, etc.) to all be installed in a common area distinct from your boot drive so that
they just work with their selected configurations whatever you boot.

Ah the 'joys' of Windows...

I just got an email from allrebates.com.

My $50 Kaspersky rebate (the Staples one using the Easy Tech Service) is Status: YES.

Yay! I think.

EDIT: Did not see that the MiR requires purchase of tax software (for Kaspersky AntiVirus, K Internet Security is still good to go).

Also, anyone that wishes to try this software for 30 days to see if it is fine by your standards, download the trial here:

http://www.kaspersky.com/trials?chapter=186685226

If you like it, all you have to do is buy it and enter the key into the already installed software and you will be good to go.

Also, Skeeedunt, I just downloaded the trial, you can just install the antivirus part.

Also, on my system, the entire KIV with all modules installed and running at default settings, it only using less than 20mb of RAM (firewall is enabled and everything)

Thanks for the info guys. I downloaded the trial and installed it on my Vista VM. Seems to be working pretty well so far.

Apparently Vista's outbound firewall doesn't prompt you to setup rules, so I'll probably just use Kaspersky's anyway.

Sorry Kaspersky guys, but I am hijacking this thread. I merged all of the other security deal threads into this one's OP and I have asked the mods to lock the old ones.

On the other hand, enjoy the new deals! WebRoot Spysweeper is now free after MiR!

and you can now get paid for getting a mcafee product!

Why not just merge the Kaspersky threads into one Kaspersky thread? I have no interest in other ones, and would rather not root through a giant thread of non-related deals and discussions.

Don't have time to cruise this whole thread, but Staples has a number of FAR security packages this week (5/6/07 - 5/12/07). Use one for a competitive upgrade for your choice of any other when these expire.

ER = Easy Rebate
IS = Instant Rebate
MIR = Mail In Rebate

McAfee Total Protection
$79.99 - $10 IS - $25 ER - $45 MIR = FAR (No Upgrade Rebate req'd)
SKU: 656949

CA Internet Security 3-user
$69.99 - $10 IS - $25 MIR - $35 extra MIR = FAR (No Upgrade Rebate req'd)
SKU: 659139

Webroot Spy Sweeper with AV
$49.99 - $15 IS - $35 MIR = FAR (No Upgrade Rebate req'd)
SKU: 663977

---

FAR with purchase of any router, shredder or EasyTech service:

Norton Internet Security
$69.99 - $10 IS - $20MIR - $40 bundle MIR = FAR
SKU: 681418

Norton Internet Security
$69.99 - $10 IS - $20 MIR - $40MIR with router purchase = FAR
SKU: 656406
---

This should work for the above Norton products:

Linksys Wireless-G Kit with Notebook card + Router
$99.98 - $50 IS - $20S ER = $29.98
SKU: 569276
