Same case with AntiVir (once the popup is disabled) and in most cases Kaspersky (as long as you are not one of the few with the strange slowdown).

AntiVir Classic (Free Edition) is probably one of the most lightweight AntiVirus products that I have ever used, on my system it has 2 processes going with a combined memory usage of ~8mb at the moment (not updating or scanning, but realtime protection is running strong).

Add to the mix that Antivir has a higher detection rate than any other freeware antivirus (for home users), a higher detection rate than NOD32 (in some tests AntiVir even bests Kaspersky) and one has to consider that AntiVir is a compelling security product.

Thanks guys, OP has been updated.

Regarding splitting this thread into "one thread per product," I am still open to suggestions. But, so far it looks like it is going to stay all in one.

What are folks opinions about the Comodo (free) products vs these? Is it better to mix and match or is an integrated suite better?

Folks,

Unless you're looking to protect a public access computer or something the elderly/kids go into contact with, AVOID VIRUS PROTECTION PROGRAMS AT ALL COST. It cripples the perf on your box and doesn't really protect that much anyways. Even for your kids and parents... just don't let them run as admin. Ever see virus protection on *nix or a mac?

I think it's dangerous of you to say that as long as we are not elderly or children that we don't need antivirus protection. That could not be further from the truth. Any protection is better than none. Even if it only catches 50% that's 50% more than someone who has NO protection.

AntiVir uses < 10mb of memory on my notebook, has one of the highest detection rates in the industry, and I can tell no difference in performance with it enabled or disabled.

NOD32 and Kaspersky (minus the minority who are experiencing the strange slowdown bug) use minimal amounts of system resources as well.

How does AntiVir cripple my performance?

I have also always backed mechBgon in pushing limited user accounts.

Ever see virus protection on *nix
Yes

Changing subjects, this thread is getting rather long. Any objections to locking it and starting fresh?
