Antivirus software slowing my computer

I used to use McAfee ASAP, and my computer ran very well. I almost didn't notice it taxing my system when running in the background. Unfortunately the license has expired. Since ASAP ran well, I went with McAfee VirusScan. Now my computer's running very very slowly.

Will Norton Antivirus be any better? Any other suggestions on a Antivirus that won't lag my system? Thanks.

Upgrade from your P3 700 to an AthlonXP or Athlon64, that's my advice Modern antivirus software is now watching for not just viruses, but also Trojans, worms, dialers, adware, spyware and hacking tools, and there's a certain price to pay for that. I can vouch for the AMD processors being relatively strong with McAfee's engine, based on my experience with various flavors of McAfee at work.

If you want to give Norton Antivirus 2005 a crack anyway, 15-day trialware here. Nothing to lose If you need something "lighter" and can give up some of the bells and whistles, Grisoft AVG Free Edition might be worth a look. I don't think stops nearly as much in the spyware/adware/Trojan department, though. Schadenfroh did a write-up of some antivirus softwares here that might help too.

Antivir (freeware and requires no registration) is going to be your best bet for a compromise between great detection rates and low use system resources.

Yep,

An up grade to something faster would be a big help. I built my first PC based on a PIII 550E overclocked to 733 and replaced it 2 1/2 years ago. If you are running Win XP, that and other modern software tends to load up computers so speed helps these days.
