I use Avast 4.0, and if used with Panda online free scanning, and Trend Micro it works very well. I run full scan w/Avast every Sat, thenright after than I use Panda online, then next Sat it's Avast full scan and Trend Micro online. My subscription to Panda Titanium just ran out a month ago. Might get it again but certified tests show avast a tad more effective and near the top wit even the top paid A/V's. Panda was a ways down at about 80% detection rate. Avast was at about 86%.

Trend Micro's PC-cillin. I tried AVG but it is not nearly as good. It lets in infected emails that PC-cillin blocks.

Well I get rid of Panda TI '04. I'm in the middle of a project and don't have time to deal with its flakiness with Outlook 2003. Downloaded BitDefender Std, pretty happy with it and tech support actually answers emails in an acceptable period of time.

One thing I've learned, each program has its own idiosyncracies.

I was using NOD32 until I read the most recent PC Magazine. In their tests, NOD only caught 2 out of 60 email viruses. I called it a day after that. Im trying Panda Titanium now but I don't like the limited amount of options. Ive already tried out Avast and BitDefender which both sucked in my opinion. Maybe Kaspersky?

Trend Micro PC-Cillin is the best IMO.
I used to have Norton and AVG. AVG found way more things than Norton, but PC-Cillin found a few things AVG did not.

That's not really a big deal. All versions of Norton have the same virus definitions. I have a copy of 2002 on one of my machines that still gets updates (you just have to reinstall ).

I'm trying Panda (Platinum version), but so far it seems like complete crap. The built in firewall is not allowing Outlook Express to work at all.

It's slow and too cartoonish.

only if Norton stopped support NAV 2002 I would have to upgrade to latest version.

Umm engine updates alone are worth upgrading. These days, virus definitions aren't enough.

all three....talk about a resource hog

That's 3 AVS on 3 systems

Can't decide which one you like best?

On a related note, there does not seem to be a clear winner from this thread at all. It seems people are having drastically different experiences with all the products.

AVG it is for me; you cannot beat free. As long as your smart about things, any virus scanner that is reguarly updated will do fine, imho.

One reason why a lot of folks are having differences is due to them not tweaking things for maximum security. Good example is most AV apps disable the scanning of zipped/archived/packed files by detault. Then they wonder how they picked up a virus or why it didn't perform well on a test. Others don't bother looking for virus signature and program updates before testing. Finally others just prefer the way their comp runs with one versus the other.

Trend Micro's Internet Security 2004 (about $40. online) Has the best AV, plus a software firewall and other nice to have's. (ie: Spam blocking) I also have the router hardware firewall, but know that isn't totally hack proof; so a Software firewall is also nice to have.

For those of you that don't seem to understand that marketing $$$ can sway supposedly objective research results:

Link

Link Click Comparatives and Select the Online Feb 2004 results. Might shed some light on some of the more well marketed products like *cough Trend Micro *cough Norton

Bump
Its been a month since the last post
what are you all now using for antivirus software?

i been using Panda but not so thrilled about it, i would like to use PC Cillin since lots of people say its great but i cant afford 40$ x 3 for three computers?

What do you people think of E-Trust, since its free at the moment?

What i dislike about panda:
-Updates sometimes Fail and sometimes it tells me the account information in wrong when its correct so it fails to update and have to do it manually.
-It has no automatic scanning already present, you have to just do a schedule task
-Full scan on computer sometimes always will hang, "the software reported an error" window comes up almost when its over
-the email scanning, i never really know if it actually works, i use Outlook, so when i open outlook the panda scanning comes up and you get a pop which is very annoying, because you have to Click OK everytime. and it seems to scan only emails already in your inbox, i dont really know if it scans the emails that come in after send/recieve is clicked.

regarding Panda Plat

I wish I could turn off the splash window that loads when I open MS outlook. Panda has caught virus' in my inbox and after I send/receive new email. It's working.

Didn't notice any major speed differences coming from NAV2003 and 2004. So far I've only had one instance of updates not working and having to do it manually. Used for about 2 weeks now.

So how's the system performance impact of the Panda products? I used to use NAV but it caused a noticable slowdown in games. Then I tried kaspersky and for some reason it consistently made my 3Dmarks increase from no AV. But kaspersky was a pain because it scanned everything in every folder I opened everytime, and that's not very good when I have 5GB+ files in some folders.
