I'm kind of weary on the backlash on this. The criticism is on how the shifter operates.
There seems to be multiple visual cues on what gear is engaged. I would think it would force people to focus more on what they are doing and naturally setting an environment where people visually check indicators rather than blindly operate a vehicle in a setting where visual cues are paramount and necessary for safety.
Then again, that is just me. I am not an ergonomic engineer or a behavior expert.
Currently there are no laws or even guidelines dictating automatic or semi-automatic shifters nor the order of the gear selection. PRNDL is just a standard because that's how traditional planetary gearsets operated for a long time.
People take things for granted. This is not criticism of Yelchin.
RIP, Anton Yelchin.
The transmission itself is irrelevant...People who don't use the parking/hand brake when safety demands it shouldn't have granted licenses and out there driving. It's not hard FFS.
