The old Chekov must feel terrible outliving his newer, younger "replacement". Gut wrenching to pass the torch onto a successor only to see them die.

Anton's new Chekov was pretty damn good. I think I even preferred his to the original.

Looks like Anton has 5 films in post, or completed. I'm gonna mark them to watch.

I bet he laments the loss of his son more.

If it was indeed a Grand Cherokee, that stupid shifter may have claimed a victim...

I had a Chrysler 300 as a rental car with that shifter and it sucked. It was hard to tell what position the shifter was in.

RIP

I was really surprised when I read that yesterday. I've really liked him in the roles I've seen him in. RIP

RIP Remember first seeing him in 'Alpha Dog' where he was excellent.

Any idea on the year of his Jeep Grand Cherokee? There's a huge recall and issue going on with the 2014-15 models regarding the electronic shifter. Multiple people are having a hard time successfully shifting it into park and have been exiting there vehicles with the car in neutral or reverse and having the car roll forward or back unexpectedly. It's user error though, not a malfunction in the design.

Chrysler replaced the electronic shifter for the 2016 model year to a more traditional gate shifter in direct response to the problems and complaints people were having. Wondering if this was a cause in the accidental death of Yelchin?

I didn't want to derail the thread but I had the same question. I had a 2014 Grand Cherokee with that shifter and never had a problem with it, but it seems like enough people do that they changed it. There's several places it displays the gear you're in.

The car must have been running too, because you can't turn the thing off the normal way without it being in park.

Poor guy... I only saw him in the new Star Treks but he was good

re: that jeep connection

The car that crushed actor Anton Yelchin to death was in need of a fix that led to the recall of over a million cars.

The 27-year-old actor was found dead early Sunday morning at his Studio City home, pinned by his car against a brick gatepost. LAPD officials told CBS News that the car that killed Yelchin was a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which was subject to a Fiat Chrysler voluntary recall of 1.1 million cars over a shifter that led people to mistakenly believe their car was in park. TMZ reports that Yelchin's car never got the fix.

Yelchin's car was in neutral and still running when his body was discovered, and the coroner's office has officially ruled his death an accident.

In April, Fiat Chrysler's recall covered 2012-2014 Dodge Chargers, 2012-2014 Chrysler 300s and 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokees. Jalopnik explains that the electronic shifter did not give the driver enough feedback, causing them to mistakenly believe the car was in park and leading to several roll-away incidents. At least 41 people have been injured in such cases.

Two things got him, imo. That silly shifter that is hard to find the gears with, and Hill Start Assist, which holds brake pressure on for a few seconds on hills. He didn't get it into park, and it didn't move right away because of the HSA system, which held the brakes on for a few seconds, then released them.

Makes sense.

That's my theory, anyway. My GC has HSA. It works if the Jeep is pointing downhill or uphill. It holds the brakes on for a few seconds. It releases them after a few seconds, or if you press the gas pedal.

So you could be fooled into thinking it was in park, since it wouldn't move right away.

You know what makes this not happen? Systems designed for function over form, where you can actually tell what position a lever is when looking at it.

Hell, even the enterprise had a 'warp throttle lever', which didn't return to some 'neutral' position. Probably something sickly ironic about that.

TMZ is basically ripping up fiat at this point

A crucial repair to Anton Yelchin's Jeep -- that ultimately might have saved his life -- was made available to the public just days before his death ... TMZ has learned.
As we've told you ... Anton's Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo was tagged for a recall in May. But we're told the manufacturer, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, did not have an actual repair for the e-shifter problem at that point.
Sources with direct knowledge of the recall process tell us Jeep dealerships just got the "fix" last week. We're told it required a software download which would install an "auto park" feature.
Our sources say the "auto park" will automatically shift the vehicle into PARK as soon as the driver's door opens.
There's no official determination yet on what happened to Anton, but as we've reported ... his Jeep was running, and in neutral, when police found his body pinned.

I've had my share of issues with my Jeep Renegade...the opposite of rolling down the hill though. I was stuck in the grocery store parking lot recently because the electronic brake (yes, it's a pushbutton ) wouldn't disengage for awhile. Among other things too...like, it went haywire once before that (the central computer that controls everything) & had to be towed in. Right now it likes to stall (and then catch) going in reverse. Lots of dumb weird electrical problems. I've had to go in for software updates three times already, which is kind of crazy for a car!

Well, it is a Fiat 500 with some cosmetic changes.
