Ants are cold blooded, like reptiles. They thrive in heat. Thus, a hot summer like we had means ants everywhere.

There are a number of remedies. Pyganic (sp?) dust, borax, terro. Spread around the base of the house concentrating on possible entry points. Repeat once every 3 weeks, or after any hard rain.

I've had really good results with that bug barrier type stuff you spray all around your house and around any opening like doors, windows, etc.

lol those always make me laugh. It's like if God was thinking to himself at one point during creation "hmm, I think the way I made ant life cycles, they'll spread too fast. OH I KNOW, I will make an ant vacuum!" And the ant eater was born.

It would be cool to have one of those as a pet, I'd call him Dyson.

dude....seriously?

Maybe he's thinking Borax and sugar? A lot of people make a syrup out of it to kill ants. You'd probably want to keep it away from pets.

The other possible household item, would be diatomaceous Earth. Put that in their path, and it will eventually kill them. I think it's pet safe.

Just use the food grade stuff and not the swimming pool stuff. I use it around here since I have puppies and they like to put everything in their mouths. I don't need something that will hurt them.

I try not to use harsh chemicals. Fipronil is pretty nasty and can affect other animals and beneficial insects indiscriminately. Been using White Vinegar for years and it works well and is a hell lot cheaper than store bought solutions. Same goes for Roundup, I use 2 cups of salt and a gallon of water with a dab of dish soap. 10x cheaper than round up.

"White vinegar will also send an eviction notice to ants on your premises. They cannot bear its strong smell. In addition, the smell masks their scent trails, making them lose their direction.
  1. Mix equal parts of white vinegar and water.
  2. Pour the solution into a spray bottle.
  3. Add a few drops of any essential oil and shake the bottle thoroughly.
  4. Spray this solution around baseboards and other entry points.
  5. After an hour, wipe up the ants using a damp paper towel and discard them.
  6. Repeat once daily until the ants are completely gone.
You can also use this vinegar solution to clean floors, window sills and countertops to prevent ants from crawling over these surfaces."

I've fought this battle off and on for decades. I'm fingers crossed right now, was thinking about this just this morning. Haven't spotted an ant in the house for something like two years now, knock on wood.

My advice:

Don't spray poison. There's too much poison around and especially you don't want to spray it in your house. It's not necessary.

I have used baits you buy in the store. Sometimes with success, other times not. The best method I've found was in a newsgroup. It was posted by a professional who deals in this stuff all the time. Here it is out of my data:
- - - - - -
Select a product with boric acid. "Terro" is one such product. The application requires placing the bait on small squares of thin cardboard. Once the ants discover the food source you'll see hundreds of ants carrying the bait back to their nest and in 2-3 days they will be gone. You do not need to spray insecticides and these won't kill the queen anyway.

Here's a good one from the thread:

He's responding to my question whether the ants could be nesting in my walls because I couldn't find where they were outside, where they were coming in...

That could be a slim possibility. I would stay outside and keep looking out there. Roll over rocks, move any items sitting flat on the ground, turn over landscaping timbers if any, pull back mulch and look under it. I have learned that if you want to get the ants out of the house DO NOT put bait on the inside. Too many times I go to a home where either the homeowner, or another PCO has been baiting on the inside, and they all seem to say the same thing, "it seems to get worse after they bait." I wonder why. AFTER
looking where I told you, if you are still having a hard time finding them, do this:

Boil about three cups of water with 1 cup of sugar, once the sugar has melted remove it from the heat, take an old sock and place a slice of apple in it and drop it in the water for about 10 minutes. place it on the outside of the house by the room where the ants are. Leave it and go back a day later, and there should be numerous ants, then you can easily trace their trail to where the nest is. Once you find that, then bait where the nest is and you should eliminate the problem. Also remember to remove the apple and the sock after the second day, because if you don't, you may attract other ants. Good Luck to you

I have used the sock, apple and sugar water method, followed by baiting outside, several times with success. You can buy orthoboric acid cheap in quantity at a hardware store.

Fire your exterminator and get a new one. or call them and tell them to eradicate the pests. I haven't seen an ant in 10 years since we got an exterminator.

Also, you can use regular boric acid...or dish soap to form lines that they can't cross.

There's no cure for the angst. We all face an existential crisis sooner or later.

More seriously though, I had carpenter ants in a hollow tree in my yard. Before I filled it with expanding foam, I used 2 products Advance Granular Carpenter Ant bait and Maxforce Carpenter Ant Bait Gel. One, iirc is protein based and the other is sugar based so depending on what they're in the mood for, you get them either way. It killed them dead over a period of a few days because the poison was brought back and spread throughout the colony so everyone including the queen died.

But I also used the bait gel for some ants that were excavating under my paved driveway. I put a line of the gel inside the garage where it was safe from pets and other large animals. The ants slurped up every last morsel and before I knew it, they had disappeared. So I'm pretty sure that stuff works on more than just carpenter ants.

The site below is where I got the products and is an excellent resource. If you can't find what you need there, it doesn't exist. I can't post the link but do a search on 'do my own pest control' (all one word). Just be careful with anything you get from there. Those seem to be professional extermination products so treat them with respect and care.

I normally look for them outside. I don't care if they're in the grass or whatever, but as soon as I see them on a porch/deck, or probably within about 5-10 feet of the house, they get sprayed. I think part of what keeps them away is the pool... they love my pool, and sometimes enjoy taking a swim in it. That's when I find the skimmer basket littered with dead ants.

Ants can go days without food but only 24 hours without water. Avoid leaving any standing water around (classes, bowls, vases, etc.). I've found the water based poison like this is the best: http://www.terro.com/products.php?product=liquid_ant_bait

I think ants being attracted to water is something that a lot of people forget about.. or just don't even know. I'll admit that I didn't know about it for a while, but after they invaded my dishwasher, I... well, I found out the hard way.

I solved my ant problem temporarily by moving. Been in the new house for a year and *knocks on wood* we haven't had any problems!
