Must be a PC. Other than that, brand not important.

Discrete graphics requirements:

[*]ATI - Mobility Radeon 7500 or greater
[*]nVidia - geForce 4xx Go or greater
[*]32MB dedicated RAM

CPU - Anything post-P3, but a speedy CPU is not as important.

16 MB of dedicated memory for the original mobile radeon might still be better than using your cpu and system ram for graphics like the "intel extreme"

well it depends which intel extreme, if its the newest one intel exterme 2. I think thats acutally faster.

And OP, I am selling my X31, if you are interested LMK. It runs great and can play WC3, but it can't play WoW. It drives my 1900FP fine and also my new 2001FP

It's got potential, but you're right - it is the R7000 based Mobility. Better than IEG, but not by a huge amount. And IEG2 is swift enough for WC3 and other RTS games.

The suggestions of a Mac are ... cute ... but typically one wants discrete graphics for gaming. What am I going to play on a Mac, Photoshop?

Added some specifications to the first post.

I use my desktop PCs, my PS2, and my XBox for most games. I do have WoW, Sim City 4, UT2004 and a couple other games on my Apple PowerBook G4 for when I'm sitting in an airport or spending a borning evening in a hotel room. There aren't a whole lot of games for Macs, but there are enough to keep busy:

WoW sucks on my ibook, i don't understan why, the 9200M should be better than the 7500M on my friends thinkpad and he gets much better framerates.

Personally, I game to be entertained. I'll spare the fire and brimstone and just say that there is no way in hell I am considering anything Mac-based. Thanks for the informative post though.

RichieZ - I'd love to consider your laptop, but those three letters "IBM" tend to stand for "Insanely Big Money" pricewise. They cost big money to buy and command it on resale; suffice it to say, I can't provide it.

At the pricerange of the 12.1" + discrete solutions though, I start wandering into the eMachines m680x territory - A64, 15.4" WXGA and MR9600. Worlds apart in mobility, I know, but it's still the same money range.

Typically one doesn't buy a highly portable/ultra portable for gaming either though. I also tend to use my xbox, game cube, desktop PC for games. When I want to get real work done I use my mac... it gets the job done much better. Actually I don't even have my desktop at school with me. Too much of a PITA...

If you are buying this laptop for gaming then you mise well go for something like the larger machines you described. 12.1 machines even with discrete graphic chipsets aren't built for gaming.... They are typically too slow anyway...

I bought an aopen barebones 1557gls (ati 9700) and fitted it with 1.6 dothan 40gb 5400 drive cdrw/dvd 1gb of pc2100 and intel 802.11g alll in cost me UK 700. It is quite light and has good battery life (1.5 gaming 4hours usual). I get 1300 on 3dmark2005 when running at 500/200 on the gpu.

i know you have been very specific, but how about a 13.3" screen as found on the Sony ultra-notes.

1280x800 ultrabrite screen
Geforce 6200 graphics
1.8KG total weight.

Then seriously consider a notebook with MR9600 or better graphics. It's a good feeling to be able to play the newest games as they come out. You're probably going to want your notebook to play this summer's new games, especially after the wave of new demos after E3 in May. Going with 32 MB and a low end GPU or even integrated graphics is just going to limit the gaming life of your notebook.

Check out Winbook, they have a 12.1" series that DOES have discrete graphics, they just don't list which! Note that it uses the GME chipset, which provides DDR333 & an AGP 4x slot. I would e-mail/call them and I think you have an awesome notebook for the $
Specs from Winbook's Site

Hope this helps M4H

The Winbooks use Intel Extreme 2 on the ULTRA POWERFUL AGP BUS. Score another point for "Stupid Advertising."

If I can find the older version of the Sony that REMF was pointing at that might help ... but even a R9600 leads me to believe it'll still be a pricey unit.

I'm really looking for something in the "64MB MR9000" range

Edit - Like this puppy with the MR9200. Though the P-M 725 and dual format DVD burner don't spell "Cheap" either.

I have to recommend against the small Sonys. Sony really doesn't care whether their notebooks gets enough air or not, it's no wonder they build the most compact ones with lots of power-consuming stuff in them.
