My two:
Kimber Ultra Carry II stainless
AMT Hardballer Longslide.

The longslide is unbelievably fun to open carry. I get so many unbelievable wtf looks from people haha.

I don't know anybody with experience so I have no gauge. What didn't they like about it? Anyway, I still need to get a feel of a lot of brands. Need to see how some Sigs feel too.

It's huge and unwieldy for a full size 9mm. Also the safety is entirely too small. All the other full size 9mms are better in virtually every way (ex: Glock 17, H&K USP, Sig 226.)

I need to find a place to try the 92F. I've heard good things and want to feel for myself.

The bad:

The trigger is crap, the trigger in single action has a mile of creep.

The grip seems a little bulky for a 9mm.

The paint on the sights fade after about 20 years.

The good:

Its reliable. I bought my 92f in January of 1989; I can probably count the number of malfunctions on 1 hand.

My buddies and I used to reload and shoot a lot of 9mm. It was not uncommon for us to shoot 1,500 rounds in a single day. Regardless if it was a reload, factory, round nose, hollow point,,,, that beretta ate everything I fed it. Sometimes we would shoot anywhere from 2,000 - 3,000 rounds a month.

The only brand of ammo I had problems with was CCI blazer. For some reason the rounds turned vertical in the magazine. Don't ask how or why, but it was only CCI that I had issues with.

I have 2 1911s, both Springfields and I am in the processing of building a custom 1911 with my uncle.

I didn't like the grip feel, the trigger pull, the sights, or the accuracy. I hear they all aren't inaccurate, but the one I shot was.

They are large and heavy.

I have a Taurus PT92 which is basically a clone of the Beretta. Very accurate and low recoil though.

My last acquisition was a Springfield Amory Custom Loaded 1911A1 in stainless steel with adjustable sights. It is by far the most accurate of my automatics that are bigger than .22. It was supposedly used, but by the wear marks put on it since I got it, it could not have been fired more than a couple of times. Very pleased with the purchase. I also have a Beretta 92F and a Ruger P89 in 9mm, I have had no problems with either. I must say that the Beretta fits my hand very well(I have huge hands). Neither of the 9s is even close in accuracy to the Springfield. I am using the .45 just for targets, not liking the thought of the single action in the heat of the moment for defense yet.

I just looked at that R1 online and now I'm drooling. I love the looks of it (which is honestly half the reason I'm eying a shootable 1911). Do you think it was a good value?

Mine is taking a little while to break in.

<100 rounds, I had about a 7% failure rate. Meaning, during the first 100 rounds I had around 7 failures in some form or fashion.

100 - 200 around 3 failures.

>200 rounds, no failures.

The last time I shot my 1911 I ran three different types of ammo through it - federal, winchester and remington, and had no problems.

My 1911 R1 was around $690 + tax. One thing about it, you have a pistol made by a company everyone recognize.

Everyone always dissuaded me from buying a 92f and never really explained why so thanks for the info. I like it simply because of the sight picture, but I guess that doesn't help much if the trigger sucks.

Double action trigger is not that bad.

Single action is like "holy crap, is this thing ever going to fire?"

It would be nice to have the best of both worlds, a great trigger and a pistol that is reliable. I know that when I squeeze that trigger, my 92f is going to fire. There is no doubt in my mind that the pistol is going to work.

As for my remington 1911, its going to take another 1,000 - 2,000 rounds before I can say that.

I would not hesitate on buying another 92f, lets put it that way.

Picked this one up last week. A Sig Sauer 1911 Scorpion. Shoots great, but is going to break me on ammo costs. My next pistol is going to be a Sig P238 Scorpion, keeping it in the family.

You my friend, have excellent taste.

I was seriously considering the P290. Played with one at my local store. Its probably the only true pocket 9mm that has decent build quality.

http://mouseguns.com/PocketAutoComparison.pdf

With the extended mag (8+1 vs. 6+1) it fits my hand perfectly. Even without the pinky finger it is very comfortable to point and pull the trigger.

One thing about it though, it does feel a bit heavy to me. I really didn't compare it too much to other guns as I simply liked this one, but I notice it in my pocket. But, it is very sturdy and shoots straight.

Being double action only the trigger pull is a bit much... but if I pull the trigger back half way so the hammer is back, and then take aim I can hit exactly what I'm aiming for. Aiming and then pulling the trigger quickliy results in me moving the gun too much. So, it takes a little getting used to, but now that I've put a few hundred rounds through it I'm quite familiar with it and comfortable.

Beat this: My Colt 1911 from my great uncle, serial number 30k. Made in 1913 and has all original parts and most all of the bluing on it, but the inside of the barrel doesn't look so hot. It cycles nicely but I can't field strip it because the barrel link won't swivel out of the way... it needs to go to a gunsmith I think. I will take better pics of it one of these days.

This thing feels amazing in the hand.

I love this thing too much to shoot. Do you guys have a recommendation for a $500-$600 1911 that shoots decently?
